Damn junkyard!
Off to get some flat tops, waggy shafts, and some HD 44 outers!
They have also two Pathy fuel tanks aside (unmolested) for anyone that may be thinking Pathy tank in the future (pump and all $30 ea if you pull).

Is thats really where you went? :) I was going to head down there soon for some parts and other things. If thats really where you went I guess I'll just have to go to their back room where everything is already pulled. Maybe I'll grab the other set of flat tops that they had hiding back there also. :)

I don't understand why you need so many shafts....why not go chromos and be "done" with it?

he has chromos, hell most of us do, he told me he was collecting them for other people.... or hmmm is ryan compensating for something else? :)

Tyler... if you wheeled you would understand how nice it is to have spares.
Most folks I wheel with have Waggy axles. It is nice to grab spares when they are available. Chromos.. Dana 60's, 44's, Ford 9's... they all bust!
Me... I have chromos! However in a pinch I would run stockers in a second!
The front axle on my rig is a custom width. However, it uses Chevy short side and Waggy long side in order to get stockers that will work for spares. Custom length axle shafts take weeks to come in.

I do understand that it's nice to have spares, I just didn't understand why you needed tons of them.

For everyone else on the trail that doesn't have spares? Why does it matter to you? You're going to try to put a D60 under your front end.

Shafts go fast in Moab....... and even faster with gears and a front locker.

Shafts go fast in Moab....... and even faster with gears and a front locker.
I was pondering that just a couple days ago, and had almost convinced myself that a locker would make axle breakage less likely. It seems like you'd avoid the situations where all the force ends up on one wheel, especially the one where a single wheel gets airborn and spinning really fast then slams down.
Alpine Spirit
07-11-2007, 08:49 AM
Well that and it was my first time wheeling with the front locker and gears. By day 3 I was modifying my driving style.
Ryan Gee
07-11-2007, 09:45 AM
With Chromos and the meek little power plant we have, Dana 44's do fine. That biggest rule with stock shafts is no backing up a ledge with locker on, snap every time. A 44 is known for being somewhat on the edge with tires larger than a 37. Some folks do fine with the bigger tires, some folks don't.
A guy can step up to a 60 but it weighs close to 500 lbs. So in effect it is like driving around with another person in you rig when wheeling. So a guy goes for 44 inch tires.. ok it is 60 time. The tires weigh as much as another person easy! So now you are wheeling with the effect of two maybe three folks in your rig. Then.... the rig is high as a kite so in comes a cage. As was mentioned, the 60 weighs 500 lbs so here comes some beef on the frame to hold on to that monster! It never ends! Next thing ya know your rig weighs 7500 lbs and it is getting pushed around by a VG with 200 horse at most. So in comes a bigger engine, new tranny, tcase... bla bla bla.
It comes to a point where you realize you payed to give away a nice vehicle one part at a time. As one fella I know says "It is the body of choice". Most folks with big tires end up running similar running gear, power plant, etc.
This is where a rig like Ben's makes so much sense. Take a older rig and gut it! Lighten it up.. throw on some 37's , some D44's and enjoy. His rig keeps up with most at a fraction of the cost.
Ok.. I am done now! I think!

I've taken a first tentative step onto the road Ben is on -- I punted my tailgate recently. That's 58lbs of mostly-useless steel. I think my new design theory for my truck is that every time I add something I need to throw something equally heavy overboard, because I already feel like I don't have enough power.
I can see a day coming, maybe about this time next year, when I just lose the whole bed. I guess I'll do some sort of conversion to a scaled-down flatbed because I still want to be able to haul a week's worth of supplies to Moab or Phoenix or wherever I go wheeling.

Not sure why everyone here is so quick to think that I'm talking $#%@ by asking why he needed so many spares. Obviously I don't like the idea of a 44, but that's why I'm not going with one. I was mainly just curious as to why he needed so many, which has already been answered.
And not meaning ANY offense to Ben on here, but I wouldn't call that rig cheap, either.
Here comes the next RMXC!!!

Tyler, your question/comment made you come off like a know it all kid, hence the reaction. Ben's rig ain't cheap if you account all the modifications, but I don't doubt it was inexpensive to begin with which is what was suggested.
As for the "next RMXC" comment, so far off base. We won't boot your ass for not kissing our asses, and the fact that we can voice differing opinions and not get censored or receive PMs telling us to knock it off is refreshing.

Its because he was there had the opportunity and took it, he now has the parts and if he or someone else needs em they are available. :D If I was there I would done the same thing. When I threw the 44 under mine I ended up looking around for almost 2 months for one that was at a reasonable price and not banged up to death. Then suddenly after I got mine they started to pop up again.
And out on the trail everyone knows any spare I have or tools I have everyone is welcome to them, just get me another spare down the road. :grind:

Now with that said! Let's go wheel!! Beer anyone...

The only person (that I'm aware of, anyway) that I really don't like on other boards is Alex. Mainly because he makes a point to insult everything I do and then apologize a week later. I can guarantee you that I'm not the only one who doesn't like him!
Gone back and re-read everything and still don't understand where everyone is going wrong on the comments I made, but so be it. I made the RMXC comment because everyone gets so worked up over comments on the internet.
The way I see it, it's just like carrying 1000 spare gallons of gas, 4 of every size socket in your tool kit. Who knows, maybe you'll lose one on the trail? Good thing you got 3 more!!!
On the other hand (which doesn't affect me at all), Kevin was mentioning how he was having trouble finding one of the axles. Ripping the shafts out of them just makes them harder to find. There goes 4 more axles that can't be used.
I'm really not as opposed to having spares as everyone seems to think. Just didn't understand the quantity but it's not my thing. :)

you think he carries them all at once? wow. and 4 axles that can't be used? isn't that what a junk yard is for, to salvage what you can use? why would i care what someone coming after me thinks or needs? if i was going to worry about that, i wouldn't use Jy parts, i'd just buy new so all the d44's in the yards can stay all pristine and unmolested, until some jeeper or taco driver comes and takes them.
hey ryan, i need some spares, or will some day, why don't you hold onto a set for me.

07-11-2007, 04:48 PM
Alright, I have 5 complete waggy axles.. this is something you didn't know.
I also got those shafts way cheap... I will probably give them to guys with waggy axles when they wheel with me. Just kinda nice to have to in order to spread the love. No intent of making a dime off anyone...
Hope that answers what you were asking... :toast:

DamnHippie
07-11-2007, 05:03 PM
I think the "glad I pissed everyone off" part of your attitude is mostly what comes through loud and clear, and has a lot to do with why people respond to you the way they do.
Everyone else here seems to have some sort of history with you, they read and interpret your posts based on what they know of your style of dealing with people in the past, so even when you aren't trying to sound like a jerk, it may get interpretted that way because that's your history.
Now I guess I'll be looking at what you say with a jaundiced eye too in the future. The internet never forgets. You can't be an ass today and expect everyone to think you're the greatest tomorrow.

Wow I just saw this thread. I don't come on here often. As to Tylers comment. I'm sure a lot of people online dislike me. But why should I care? Im still going to give out the same info and stuff. I'll probably never meet 90% of people I meet online. Its funny how a lot of people judge people by just how they act online. And if I didnt "insult" your stuff I know 5 other people that easily would. You were given a ton of advice from a bunch of people and ignored it all until something broke. Your loss..

This thread is fantastic. What gets me is when people get all worked up with how somebody types on the internet. I have not met any of you yet even though we all live pretty close to each other but I hope to soon so I can remember threads like this and put faces to the screen names. I think what Ryan does is cool carrying spare parts to possibly help other people if they need it. I would feel better knowing someone else might have a part I might break. Now if I could find someone to carry stock ifs and other stock R50 parts I would be in good to go.
