New muffler for the X...have been looking at the new Flowmaster 40 Off-Road muffler. Does anybody run this muffler or have you heard anything about it...wanting to add a a deep tone to the X, but don't want to do much besides a muffer right now...will be fabricating a custom cat-back when the time (money) is right. Thanks

I know they're good and would be interested to know how it sounds. I need a new exhaust system...just 'cause :D

Well I think I'm going to go ahead and purchase the muffler later today or tomorrow...one last question...the stock pipes are 2 1/4", should I buy that size or up it to 2 1/2" and just reduce it it fit stock pipe size?

2-1/2". If you want to change out the system for airflow, you'll already be set. The larger the input diameter, the larget the sound will be as well :)

You WILL lose low end power if you go 2.5" from the muff back.

I lost low end just having a magnaflow chopped into the stock tailpipe. My early X had smaller dia pipe than the newer ones.

If you go flowmaster, there is a possibility you will get drone inside the cabin.

I lost so much low end with my flowmaster that I replaced it with a 2.5" Magnaflow. I had a 5spd...Mike's X was auto.

I have put a 2.5" exhaust on 4 of my Nissans. I only lost power with one of the four bangers. The one that still had the smog equipment.

I had thought about the loss of low end power but have dealt with turbo cars and the decrease in backpressure was a good thing for the low end power because of a decrease in backpressure (more air flow)...wouldn't that be the same for a supercharger since they both rely on forced air?

I agree turbos need major flow, that's why my Powerstroke had a 4" exhaust with no muff. I think it would hold true with chargers, too, but thought I heard, designers decide at what rpm's power is boosted.

The gains with NA engines are in the higher-rpm areas, like Lance with desert racing, where they run 'em nearly wound out.

I think in CO where you going slower, and crawling, a low end power loss is not wanted.

I believe also that you need to have more air coming in, too, so the ecu can adjust and give more fuel?

I probably shoulld have added that all those trucks would range from 30 to 90 mph offroad - not crawling. Still all the Nissan engine builders are usually concerned about the engines breathing too much on the back end. Exhaust guys would always tell me that back pressure was huge on a Nissan.

I just measured my X at a 2" exhaust. I know a 3.0 can still provide low end with a 2.5" exhaust but expect your mpg to down. One of the 2.4's I did ranges went down by over 50 miles.

I got TOO MUCH FLOW with the Flowmaster. It was on another 2.4 with headers, no smog, no O2, 3" exhaust, 103 octane, and emptied out behind the cab. I changed to the magnaflow and 2.5" and got better low end.

If I was doing my X I guess I would go with 2.25", high flow cat, and a Magnaflow. I'm not supercharged though.

Well guys...I have no idea anymore :-) but a buddy of mine has a couple extra mufflers laying around and I'm going to try them out and go from there...the one he thinks I'll like is the Edelbrock SDT, I guess we'll find out...thanks for all the help.

i didnt even mess around with a muffler on my hardbody...i chopped it of and put a glass back on it. Loud as hell and improved gas mileage and power...basically if you set the piping up right from the cat-back you get a straight pipe from that point on...just a suggestion

I've got a Flowmaster Delta 40 on mine with 2 or 2.25 piping from the muffler back. I also took out that worthless resonator. I really didn't notice much of a gain or drop with with the new muffler.

I'll get a sound clip for you tonight!!!

Well...today I had the Magnaflow installed and so far liking it...I highway drive daily and its hard to hear it, but at least the car puts out some sound now...I'm used to loud-ass old V8's and Turbo's on boost...but overall, happy with the Magnaflow...

I've got a magnaflow and like it too. I definately noticed that I lost low end power with it and my intake. Above 3k rpm it really kicks in.

Sound is good. I never liked flowmasters on smaller, not throaghty (lopey) engines. They seem to drone in the cab. The magnaflow does not.

Yea, my Magnaflow sounded good, too. Not too ricey.
