I went to radio shack...i'm told they have the only model that doesn't lose the channel when turned off.

Bronc2b, they will ALL keep the channel if you wire to an unswitched power source. You just have to shut it off independently of the key. I had to rig mine that way and it really isn't so bad. I quite often have to monitor incoming wheelers at my rides, so I can leave it on with the key off. They don't use much current when not transmitting.

That's what I have; I love it. I brought an FRS the other day and couldn't get the damn thing to work. So I spent most of my day just talkin' smack on the CB.
Actually, I've about had it with those damn toy radios. Having the CB means I never worry about the batteries. There's enough to worry about on the trails.

My Cobra FRS radios are garbage, damn things aren't loud enough and sound like a rhino farting in the jungle.
Im just glad after we hardwired my CB that it started to actually work worth a damn.

I am not a fan of the FRS either after I got my CB ... but the CB does not work right now.

I think you get what you pay for with FRS. If you pay the toy-radio prices you get toy-radio performance. My motorolas seem to work just fine.
They had some cheap Midland on eBay. Anyone had any experience with them?

Found this site through some research on antennas. Thought I would share.

I have a 2 $100 sets of FRS/GMRS. One Uniden (waterproof) and one Motorola. They both suck compared to the CB which only cost $100, complete with antenna. FRS are a waste of money unless you have to communicate with folks who don't have CBs.

Yes I admit I miss my CB. Always so crisp and clear. No batteries and it had an external speaker (I use this w/an open window when people are meeting me camping and I can still set up camp and hear).
I really need a new one. I was about ready to toss the FRS out the window.

The antenna won't be here until Jan 2nd. That will require drilling through the roof. I have done that before on another vehicle and am not afraid to do it again. It just takes time.
Once I get the antenna in and the cable run, then I will worry about the radio. I don't know when that will be. I will know more on the 2nd.
