View Full Version : Start of an SAS WTB everything

Okay I'm going to bite the bullet and start collecting things for my SAS.
Here is the plan.
I am doing a somewhat different rout. I am doing a leaf spring SUA. I don't want a giant lift Just enough for 35's. I test-fitted some 35's today and they fit in the rear fine they are close in the front they just need to be pushed forward about 3 in. It is going to be somewhat like desertrats truck on N4W.
anyway, I am trying to get the stuff I need and I want to get this finished around spring break.
So basically I am looking for anything For the SAS. I don't have access to a good junk yard so the first thing I am looking for is an axle and leaf springs with stock steering setup.
(I am doing a budget SAS so there will be no front locker yet or some other stuff. I will build it up over time. Basically I want to have a rolling axle under the truck and then start upgrades.)
Thanks

I don't have any parts help but I would just say to be very realistic about what your budget is, and the timeframe you need it all done in. I wasn't and have already poured a lot of money into my truck I thought I wasn't going to. Sure is fun, and a great learning experience though!

I have a crazy idea Jarrod....
Do not use rear shackles. Turn the leaf pack upside-down and and mount it UNDER the axle. One end on the axle, and the other on the frame and it would flex under it's own pressure.

Yes sir. That be a quarter elliptic. ;)
I have a couple D44 4.56 gear sets ($40 shipped)
And a welded D44 carrier (same price)

Sweet! Does that work well?

It's different than what you're saying, but the concept is the same, and yeah they work. The only 1/4 eliptical I've seen and ridden in drove very scary.

I've heard of the quarter elliptical setup. I think its also called buggy springs or something like that. The reason I am going with a simple lift is this will still be a daily driver, and I still want to park it in a garage (after I take the light off and move them to the front bumper). I am going to put the shackles(revolvers maybe?) in the front so axle will move on the same axis as the drive shaft(like some jeeps).
King will those gears work with the stock Nissan 4.9s?
edit...
There really isn't a set date for this to get done. I really just want it done before GONE. If it can't be I will go IFS for a little longer.

4.56 gears are too different from 4.9, that's like a 7% difference. I've always seen people say the difference needs to be within about 1% (so 4.56 and nissan 4.63 would be close enough).
My new alcan rear springs are standard half-eliptical, except they have one quarter-eliptical leaf in each pack (from the axle to the forward mount). The guy at alcan said that was to help with axle wrap.

If you have 4.9s then go with a 4.88 Ring & Pinon for the Dana.

4.9s with 35's be better anyhow.
1/4 eliptics are cool but they still have they're pros/cons. You still need lower links, upper link, track bar, all the junk you avoid be using leafs in the first place.

Oops I thought I had 4.9s I just looked at the door sticker and I have 4.6 gears. So I will take you up on that King. As I said I am planning on upgrading over time. I have been diving on the 35in boggers for about a week now and the only very noticeable differences are turning radius and steering (but I think that is more of an alignment/balance issue). The small lift this SAS will fix both of those problems.

Anyone have an idea where I can get an axle? I didn't see any on craigslist. I at least want to get the axle so I can start working on it.
Thanks

clay sent you a pm

Quarter elliptical is well, my dream setup for the rear.. The flip side is that you need the entire 4 link setup. Avalanche engineering is very well known for how well they set up quarter elliptical suspensions. Truith be told I wouldn't let anyone but them build one if I had the dough... but I don't
Coilover, coils, or air shocks are cheaper and easier to setup...
One common problem is that quarter ellipticals "unload" much like air shocks. So a suspension winch is also a necessary must with quarter elliptical..
You are guarenteed to find a sweet ford HP d44 or waggy D44 in denver. The price is usually less then 100 bucks at certain JY's.. The waggy front will cost you more in the end but you could buy the ford d44 and the waggy leafs seperate.. The ford front is 65 wms to wms so you wouldn't need front wheel spacers. It is also a HP so you wouldn't need to clock the knuckles.. The waggy front is 60 wms to wms so you'd need 1.5 inch wheel spacers to be even w your rear axle. The waggy leafs are a modest 48" long and work very well with an sas'd nissan especially if you want it to ride low....

There's a completely built waggy 44 on CO4x4 right now in the classifieds. As built as you can go on a 44 for $2k.

Another option is a wide track cheorkee 80-83 or J-10 pickup. The ones with the factory fender flares.

Low pinions those are...
Fords are high pinion and the same width. Just buy some perches and weld them on...
It would be like the Phoenix except the perches would be on the downside of the tube.

Anyone have an opinion on these?
High pinion D44 and 9" for $350 from a 78 F150.

Also, does anyone have pics of Allens suspension for comparison?

That is actually a really good deal, those are a great setup easy to fix and get parts for. Gears would be cheaper to buy for those axles. are the axles complete? (brakes, gears axle shafts)
Alpine Spirit

I think that is the setup Allen is running. So they should be wide enough WMS to WMS.

Oh I almost gaurantee the grears wont work with our nissans most vehicles came with 3.?? we need at least 4.6. Which means the carrier inside wont work with new gears. So as long as it has shafts, brakes and such sounds ok.
Also check on the bolt pattern, I dont think those are 6 on 5.5".

Big bronco/F150 stuff should be 5x5.5. Awesome deal fo sho!

I think it's too expensive lyons is further north then denver. Ford fronts are great but to get 6 on 5.5 you'd need to swap the spindle/rotor. Your best option is to pull the ford front put chevy outers on it and you'd have a ford front with 6 on 5.5. If the JY guy didn't care you could make off with the combo for 65 bucks.. Ryan has done this many times with sucess!

Don't know anything about this rear axle but it seems like a good deal if you want 4.88's.. I hate drum brakes for wheeling so it's nice to have one with discs installed..

Listen to CurleyMan on this one...... i have gotten in way too many "what axle should i run" discussions with him......He knows his shit.
Sidewinders was way cool on prices when we pulled ben's radiator fans etc..... check them out for cheap axles.

Yeah man. I have a set boxed up ready to go.lol My bro ran 35's with 4.56's for a long time. He just switched to 5.13's a few months ago. Not really a huge difference. I think you'll be happy with these.
