I just did this on Roastbeef's 2001 Frontier, 2wd pre-runner, "Automatic"
So, if you buy a complete tranny with transfer case for a 2001 Xterra you would think you can swap the whole thing in there. And, you can. But, apparently the tranny housings that are setup for 4wd lack a place to bolt your existing shifter bracket. I'm not sure if there is a different bracket i was lacking or the actual shifter assembly is different.
Luckily, the transmissions are the same. You simply need to swap the tail-housings and output shafts and you can bolt a TX10 to your existing tranny. It's a little work to pull all the internals out, but it's pretty straightforward. Just put everything back the way it was.lol
Right: 2wd tail housing and shaft; Left: 4wd These are interchangeable with the tranny:

The shaft comes out the front. So, everything has to come out!

The speedometer sensor plugs are different. But, you can connect the the two wires any which way and it will work.
You need a 4wd Tranny x-member. It bolts right in.
Drive shafts, solid axle up front, and you're good to go. :bannana:
Thought this might be helpful for anyone who blows up a transmission, too. you can use a one from a 2wd or 4wd rig.
