Since Im about to fab up some Rock Sliders, i figured i would see what you all think are the best design.
Shrockworks Style

RockRail Style

Does it really matter that much? the all round are cheaper, but dont seem as strong. I also decided to bolt mine on.

Dunno much about sliders but I prefer shrock's since they apparently mount to the body mounts and the frame which would seem stronger to me.
EDIT:
Edited to the post below this one....damn pix. I still prefer shrock's since they just catch my eye and seem sturdy anyways.

EDITED
Oops. Sorry Sully. i used a bad picture. If i made some shrockworks style they wouldn't mount to the body.

The rockrail style are the closest to what I prefer, but they seem to be made with 2x4 tube from that picture. I made mine from 2x2 3/16 wall.

In hind sight, I would prefer something a little wider than mine. Needs to be wide enough to protect the lower section of the doors.
Wide enough to stand on to get to the roof (if you have one).
Maybe I should be more careful with my passenger side! I've gotten rocks above my sliders twice now and have the damage to show for it.

I prefer the Shrock style, but then that is what I have mounted. I also have young children that climb in and out of the X so having something for them to stand on to get in helps a lot!

The tube-style is easy to fix if you damage a section of the sliders.

The Shrockworks ones are nice, but in my opinion are too much money- ($430 plus shipping) for something that is designed to take a beating.

My complaint with the shrock stuff is that it doesn't stick out far enough(less protection, not a good step rail, etc.). I went the custom route for $200 and would do the same thing if I ever did it again.
I have the 4Crawler ones. They work great for me. I haven't had any problem with anything coming over the sides but on thing I have noticed is that I have bent the underside of them. They are also very stable on a hi-lift.

Round tube... I made mine with the help of some weirdos in Denver :). I should have used .188 wall tube because I have since dented and bent the hell out of my .120 wall tube... The positive part of custom work Is that I can easily (4hrs $80.00) switch to the thicker stuff.

Looks like the majority prefer the Shrock style, Im sure making them yourself would cut the cost considerably

Where done you get your work done? Around here my options are to pay up for nice ones or make my own.

They wrap really closely to the body too.

They are 2"x3" box tubing and .120 DOM steel x 1.75" with center supports

ehhhhhhhh.....expensive, more than Shrock. OK $502 bare steel
Told ya. But I like them.
I since my X isn't running up to par, I think I am going to get new 6 x 9"s. Think that will fix it?
What you need to do is mount one or two of these:

Make sure to port it so air comes in at the front and goes out at the rear.
Put the car in N and away you go.

Didn't you say custom? 502$ to me isn't custom!

Ok. So $502 for someone local to build them. $399 from Shrock, but you haven't added in the shipping cost from Shrock either. When I compared the price of the 2, it was cheaper to get them from Armorology, but they are not powder coated.
James - I have a hook-up for powder coating when you are ready, if you are going that route with yours.

An xterra guy from Minnesota did mine. I could email him and see if he'll still do it though. He only charged me $200 but that was like 4 years ago

Thats not a bad price for the quality of those things. Im just going to go make my own . I wish there was somebody nearby with experience though.
I want to make mine too. We can get together and work on them. I'm sure making two sets at once will take a whole lot less time than making two sets separately.
Let me know!

from the place i work i got this steel from a jobsite
im a crane operator and they were going to throw away
this whole pallet of steel so i told them to put it in my company
truck and they did.....and sorry none left bill took about the
last of it.....1- 6 foot piece left jeff
Oh... I work in construction company. Never thought about it, but I'll ask them to keep an eye on leftover pieces for me from now on. Thanks!
What kind did you use (thickness, diameter wise, etc.)

2 1/2 x 2 1/2 1/4 wall heavy but stout

1/4 wall is really too heavy for sliders. Martin used 2x3 1/4 wall and ended up with 150 lbs of deadweight that has to be hauled up the mountain on every wheeling trip. He's gonna rebuild them with 2x2 3/16 wall soon. That's what mine are, and they weigh 70lbs for the pair.
Here's a good place to get steel, both salvage and new: http://www.kksurplus.com/

Would it be stronger if it's square (rectangle) or round?
Would it be stronger if it's square (rectangle) or round?
I'm no structural engineer, but I would think that round would be stronger and able to distribute force more evenly.
Yeah, but on the other hand square would have corners and that also seems to add to the strength...
I guess I'll go by the looks. I think round ones look better, so I'll be looking for 2" diameter 3/16 thick pipe :) Home Depot might have those :P

for that much steel, you'll pay a lot more at the depot than from a steel yard. especially since you can get scrap that is maybe a little rusty for a lot cheaper. i usually go to atlas steel downtown or k&k surplus as mentioned above.
What do they charge at steel yards on average? I thought they sold it by pound, which, if I'm buying 50# of steel might add up. I guess depends on how much they charge per pound too...
Packman5280
03-26-2008, 10:52 AM
it varies, depending what the market price is, but scrap will always be cheaper than new.

Its usually around 30 cents per pound- minimum of 20$ for scrap,
DamnHippie
03-26-2008, 01:11 PM
K & K generally charges 40-50 cents a pound for mild steel scrap, depending on its condition and whatnot. Their new steel prices aren't bad either. I paid about $70 for new 2x2 3/16 tube (13 feet of it, I think).

When I went to K&K, they gave me a discount for paying in cash, and they are really friendly.

Heh, yeah, Hart does like doing cash business, I always make sure I have some twenties in my wallet when I go there (because I always buy something there if if it's not what I went to look for).
