I'm talking to a guy about a Camry. It is a '93. I'm assuming that it is similar to a PU's V6. He thinks that it has a busted timing belt. Are they an interference motor?

Sorry. I know the I4's in those era Camrys are non interference since I had one snap in the 91 Camry I drove in highschool without any engine damage. However, I have no idea on the V6 since I gave the shop manual I had away when my sister inherited the car.

no, camry v6's are non-interference. i asked that very question of my mechanic buddy a few months back because my sister was told her 94 needed one, and i wondered how long she could push it without one. kipp (mechanic) put some lexus heads on his old 94, so he knows them pretty well, and he told me that it was not an interference motor.

if you're looking to buy it or help a friend with diag, try turning it over, if it goes really fast and high pitched, probably timing belt.

Interference motor or not. ALL Toyota v6s form the late 80's through 95 have head gasket issues. I have a 92 toyota p/u that has blown head gaskets twice. The dealer fixed it and then less than 20k later they blew again. This time the dealer would not fix the issue. I found a company that re-manufactured toyota V6 long blocks with o-ringed heads and changed it myself. Changing a timing belt is easier than doing a set of head gaskets.

this is true. in fact, up to 100k miles, toyota would replace them for you under recall. maybe not more than once, but you'd think a replacement would actually be a fix. maybe not.
