View Full Version : Camping/Wheeling Trip?
In my quest to go to different camping spots in the state to check out as many as I can...I have been giving some thought to taking a trip up near Glenwood Springs.
Here's what I'm thinking.
Coffee Pot Road to White Owl Lake or Heart lake and camp there for a few days.
There are a couple trails there to check out:
Adams Lake
Grizzly Jeep Trail
Exit the area by doing Transfer Trail back out.
Coffee Pot Road and the trail to White Owl Lake are pretty mild - probably get a minivan back in there :P
The other trails are around a 4 rating so not too extreme but at least something harder than a 1 ;)
Anyone interested? Apparently there's some fishing to be done around there too. And it's supposed to be a nice scenic drive and I've never been there.

Grizzly jeep trail near Glennwood isn't the same as Grizzly Lake near BV.

when is this trip going to take place ??
when is this trip going to take place ??
No idea - I'm posting to see if anyone is interested - then we can figure that out. I'd probably make it a Friday-Sunday thing. People who don't want to camp/fish are always welcome to come run some trails and say hi though too.

im down for glenwood spring anytime!
I'm thinking the 18th-20th or 25th-27th.
I need to call the ranger district to find out conditions, but I'd imagine the snow is gone.
There are campgrounds at white owl lake, but also Deep Lake Campground sounds nice as apparently there are some shaded areas there.
Fishing for trout is available at both lakes. Both are stocked regularly.
I'll camp there and do some fishing, so anyone is welcome for that - anyone can come up for a day for some wheeling if they just want to take a drive for the day.
I will try to find out more. Dates are pretty open for me so I could do either weekend. I may also go up on a thursday if I go the later weekend.
I've got a camping\fishing trip planned with my parents for 27-29 of July. I can drive up a day earlier and camp out and wheel with you for a day before heading to Steamboat (I guess White Owl Lake is kinda along the way to Steamboat Res), if you're going to be there on the 26th, that is.
Alright. I called the ranger district. Few patches of snow but everything should be open including Deep Lake Campground and any at White Owl Lake Campground. She said that it was really nice up there - wildflowers blooming, etc.
So what's the better weekend? I get paid this weekend so it doesn't really matter to me :D
Fees are around $6/day for camping I believe, which isn't bad. There's at least an outhouse at Deep Lake so you don't have to crap in the woods.
If I can figure out how many will be there I might try and do a BBQ of sorts. Say Saturday evening, whichever Saturday we go.

Crapping in the woods isn't such a bad thing once you add this to your standard trail gear:

You don't need the plastic bag part unless you're in the desert or somewhere else where the whole biodegradable thing doesn't work out well. Just having a normal seat over your cathole in the woods makes a big difference. And if you take ladies along on your camping/wheeling trips, they'll especially like it.
You can get them at most army/navy surplus stores for about $12.

Ok, I understand a bag for solids... but what about liquids??? No way I'm dragging around a bag full of second hand water, soda and beer. Besides I never had too big of a problem with finding a bathroom in the woods (must be growing up overseas). Taking girls camping is problematic as is - they always gotta have a rock or something... Maybe I'll get one of these for this weekend's trip :) See if I get Department of Females to approve it...
