So, I'm sure some of you know that I am waiting for my roommate to finish his mustang so I can use the garage for my pathy. Well, it is almost done, just needed to time it and fire it up.
so this weekend, we give it a shot, and it fired right up and purred nicely. we all celebrated and patted ourselves on the back (first mistake, I guess).
We shut it off to add coolant, then fire it back up. It smokes, coughs, sputters and dies. We keep trying until we see water dripping from...

the throttle body.

checked the oil, it was suddenly full (not 1/2) and oddly wattery. drained the coolant and only got out about half of what we put in. looked into the intake and saw a lake of coolant. so this is bad.

we decide the top half has to come back off. after unbolting it (only 3 of 4 bolts were tight) I go to lift it up so we can reach the vacuum lines underneath it, when about a gallon of coolant flows out into the lower intake. Have you ever dumped water down the intake of a motor? yeah, it's like dicks in asses, it doesn't go there and makes you sick when you see it.

so, we may have smoked the motor that has taken 3 YEARS to finally get installed. Still not sure why it leaked, if the TB is bad or if it just didn't seal properly against the EGR plate. The EGR plate is from the old motor, TB is from a JY firebird since they had a bigger diameter.

anyone got a ford 5.0 laying around? I want this rustang out of my garage so I can finish my truck.

That sucks. Reminds me of the time my buddy built a new motor for his Talon then forgot to add oil and drove it.

Even better than a ford 5.0 http://www.nissanoffroad.net/messageboard/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=23082

it's a ford what do you expect..... Easy to work on but built and engineered cheap. They are lease vehicles that's it. But i understand, the last time i picked up a wrench i rebuilt a Sabb Engine. From top to bottom took me weeks and every penny I had i think i was 21 or 22 years old. I had the car towed to the local mechanic (good guys for sure) so they could start it just in case. And they did with no trouble except for one thing. No oil pressure, Sabb's oil pump is a rotary style pump and very hard to get to with the engine in. So it all went to the junk yard and I don't do anthing more complex then swapping parts with my vehicles. It is a heat breaker for sure but a junk yard will give him 50 bucks for the ford. And then you will be able to finish your nissan and wheel with me. So give him the phone numbers packman and start swapping axles.

don't think the 5.6 will fit, but thanks clay. hehe, not that he'd put a nissan motor into his stang anyway.

I think we will put it all back together, new gaskets etc, then pressure test the cooling system before adding water. then we need to be sure all the vacuum lines are correct, i suspect that there is one hooked up to a coolant passage. if it runs after that, it gets a for sale sign. if not, it will probably get parted out. he has a good amount of performance parts in it that should be worth a little money.

last itme I saw that on a rebuild start up the heads were warped. The heads had been bought from someone else as an "upgrade".

Bummer though, even for a rustang. Good luck.

motor was purchased as a long block from a 91 stang, it was running when pulled, so I don't think the heads are bad, although if that weren't the case you could be right.

That sucks. My sister-in-law's Mustang started on fire going down 6th. I pulled it apart and fixed it in the parking lot of Safeway. Ah....Ford, good times.

That and two clutches, non working power, and the threat of winter convinced her to buy an X.
