Yup Bill has been turning 37s for a couple years now. The king broke a shaft with 38.5s after shockloading it.

They do well...A couple of members here have watched me bounce mine pretty good at 4000rpm's with both axles locked and a 200:1 final drive. (Not saying I wasn't worried)

The weak spot is the shafts....I think the king broke his when he got hung up....so all the power was going to the one hung up wheel.

Somewhere... Ryan has posted up the shaft sizes...just remember the size is not the only factor, type of steel, hardening process, and axle design all effect the strength. No one has been able to find any test results on the Nissan axles so we can only guess at the strength.

Due to the cost of gears it may be better to go to something else (d-44 or ford 9). If I ever bust mine I suspect I will be upgrading to something else.

I know of a guy(Bobby Long) that has an axle shaft breaking machine to test strengths. If someone had a spare shaft they would be willing to part with it would be nice to get some real numbers. He measures amount of twist, and ft/lb taken to break it. It would finally put all this info out there with numbers instead of speculation(without the numbers there is no way to say they are as strong as a 9in or D44). I do think that they are strong enough to hols up to lockers and 35's. Plenty of people have proved that, and many others have proven that 36's and 37's can work too.

I have only heard of a handful of people breaking them, but I like numbers.

Here is the info I can find in a quick search.

IIRC the Yukons broke the machine they were that strong:eek:

Sorry for the hijack, but I just wanted to hint that we could get real numbers if someone would send in a shaft or two.

My bro broke his, too, on 35's going up something we shouldn't have. lol

It all just depends how hardcore you wanna get. ;)

my bad I thought ya had 38.5s. Well that answers the question.

To get a number you can believe you'd need to test more than one sample shaft. Three would be good, but even two would be okay.

I actually have three 31 spline drum brake shafts...2 just need disassembled. I think I also have a c200 shaft (not positive what it is).

I'll take one of those 31-spline shafts as a spare if you ever need to get rid of them to make space or anything.

Also, I have a spare pair of 33-spline shafts if anyone around here ever breaks one.

Ian...they are from a hard body....and are not long enough... for your axle!

(somehow I can't make that sound right)

Oh. Well, I like hardbodies, but... size matters!

I have a whole HB C200 I'd be willing to donate parts off of for this experiment, but no H233b shafts to donate.

I sent him a message asking what it would take to get this done. We'll see what he says.

He will probable need a way to anchor the axles. Here is what the machine looks like.

It's about halfway down the page. I can't link the pics here.
