I've got that ass sagging Xterra again.

Using the springs as the primary rear lift seems to be problematic. The soft flexible springs are killed with prolonged weight.

So, if one were to go SPOA, you could go with less arch in the springs, thus less stretch when compressed or carrying lots of crap like people and dogs and trailer. This would allow the springs to flex the desired number of inches.

What are the downside issues? Allen I think has done this. Eliminates those damn rock anchors (spring hangers). Those have been a pain on Blanca most recently because I can't actually drag myself over large thrusting objects.:errr:

I've got to do something with the back end of my Xterra. I've got a 2000 w/V6, so its not like I've got an enormous amount of power. Though, when in 4lo, I've got much more power.

Thought I would try to open a discussion. If I am contemplating new rear springs - how many sets - Factory, SLR 10 leaf (snapped eye), Ian's SLR set until they sagged too far, replacement SLR set (originally too stiff). Maybe I need to think about reinstalling some of the leaves in the third set of SLR springs.:whack: Yeah, beating a dead horse over my general dislike for SLR.

I am thinking of the spring shop out west on Hwy 50 in Grand Junction. If I order new springs, I might try something different. Id really like coils, but that may not be as doable.

Please throw some thoughts.

Todd

Coils are do-able, but probably more in depth than you want to get.

The SOA should work, and if you go with Alcan they'll build them to your spec (weight, height, flex, etc...)

i was looking into going spring over in the rear, using the stock leafs and stock shackles, but pinion angle and axle wrap became a concern. i'm not sure about any of this stuff.

Hey Todd...

I will be going spring over soon as well due to sagging here is my plan & parts. Ryan has helped me with this idea.

Front hangers to be changed out since they are getting bashed and the metal will be gettin thin there. These are 1/4" thick and should not be an issue anymore.

The spring perches will need to be new and with these the axle will be adjustable either 1" forward or 1" back.

The plates will have to match for the 1" forward and back for the center pin and I will be using these.

Now I thought about going with springs but decided to go this route instead. These Johnny Joints I plan to replace the rear hangers with and weld into the frame. This will give more rear flex.

And of course some new shock mounting hardware to finish it off.

Be careful about axle wrap that can be caused/amplified by a SOA and crawler gears.

Why not go with springs like Deavers that have a lifetime guarantee against sagging?

clearance. you get more under the axle, plus by removing the stock front hangers you gain a lot too.
