from Expedition Portal:
I FINALLY finished a year long project to add all Colorado 4x4 trails (that I can find) to a Google Earth file.
This file includes 301 4x4 trails from around the state. The GE File contains trail name, trailhead location, trail track, difficulty rating, and in some cases a link to the trail information on Dirtopia.com (The Off Road Encyclopedia). Some of the track information came directly from a GPS track, but many of the tracks were determined using satellite imagery and topographical maps.
About 1/3 of the trails have been added (some with descriptions & photos) to the dirtopia.com wiki, but that's another project that will take some time to complete. ANYONE is allowed to edit the information on Dirtopia, so please feel free to add descriptions & images of trails that you've run.
This data will be updated as we run more trails. If anyone has any immediate updates, please let me know & I'll make the appropriate changes.
Please note that the rating system used in this data comes from the Colorado Association of 4WD Clubs, Inc. (CoA4WDCi - 4wd Road Rating System (http://hightrails.org/rd_rate_co.html)). They are slightly different than the traildamage.com ratings. Use the descriptions from Dirtpoia or CoA4WDI to determine if you should do the trail.
I've also prepared a Garmin .gpi file with the trailheads for all the trails. This file can be used with most Garmin GPS units (Including the Kenwood in-dash units) to add custom POI's containing all the Colorado 4x4 trails.
I'm currently compiling a custom Garmin .img map file so the trail tracks can be added to some Garmin units. Hopefully I'll be able to post that in a day or two.
Finally, I've created a GPX GPS file. This file can be used to add the tracks/waypoints to virtually any GPS device.
In 2009 we'll begin creating custom PDF versions of every trail in the state, so stay tuned for that!
