View Full Version : goneMOAB Photography
I am going to be doing some photography in Moab when I'm out there for the event.
My plans, which could change are:
Wednesday - Arches NP for sunrise photos and during the morning hours. I want to get Delicate Arch at sunrise, and possibly sunset (great colors on the rocks hopefully). During the day when the lighting is bad I figure I'll find some trail to run with some people.
Saturday - On the way home, do some more sunrise photos somewhere. Maybe go to Canyonlands.
Of course I will also be doing photos as I can from the trails.
So - if anyone is interested in joining me, let me know. If you are just getting into photography and want to learn, I'd be happy to help you.
I still will have to do some research for sunrise/sunset times and figure out when to leave to get to places in time, etc. Just wanted to post to see if anyone else is interested.
And if Kevin would approve me on the goneMOAB site I'd post this over there.

You're staying in the Colorado condo...and you think you're going to be sober enough or awake enough to get sunrise pictures? That's a gutsy proposal :D

I should be. I'll bring ear plugs :p The sober part is easy enough, I have good willpower.
I'm sure I'll figure something out - you all can't give me too much shit for attempting to get a bit of extra sleep for one night.
Hell don't you all leave decently early for the trails? I know not sunrise early but hey.

Oh and yeah.... its not quiet there.... ever.
BUT a few things to know:
* It is not quiet
* It is a party
* You better like to have fun
* If your a whiny grumpy dick I will do "Something" to your vehicle.
I know it's not quiet, let me worry about it ;)
I'm not whiny or grumpy, don't worry. I just really want some pics of Arches.

Delicate arch is best at sunset - not great access to the backside for sunrise, except from a viewing area that is pretty far away. The arches NP brochure actually lists which arches are best at sunrise, best at sunset. The quickest arches to get to are in the Windows section, and several of them are good sunrise subjects. Delicate arch has about a 3 mile hike to it, so bring a flashlight for the return part of the hike.

Yeah I knew I'd have to hike to that one. I have a headlamp. Much better for hiking than a flashlight.
I have a good zoom too, but it gets to be a pain to hike around with.
Time for the electric shock/poison dart mod for my truck. :p

I'm bringing my small camera (4x5 Ebony) and my big camera (12x20 Ritter). My rider this year is a digi cam freak and a very good photographer. I think I have put aside Thursday to do some photo stuff in Arches.
Delicate Arch is a hike. Keep in mind that it is an East/West facing arch. The morning will give a better shot on the approch side. The evening shot is going to be a fun one and require some serious rock scrambling to get a decient frame.
Take Care,
Doug
I'm a digital guy too - though I like those old view cameras. There's nothing quite like a good large format print on film. It gets very expensive though. I ran into a guy shooting one at Maroon Bells and he said it costs him about $20 per shot he takes so he has to limit himself.
Rock scrambling is fun.

The 4x5 is about a buck or two a shot. The 12x20 runs either 8 or 16 a shot depending on the film I'm using. The Croatian stuff is quite a bit cheaper than the TMAX400, but the latest round of this stuff from Kodak is just too good not to use when you can get it.
