View Full Version : Crawler Gears

I'm finally getting crawler gears. My question is wich ones should I get? Calmini or AC? The Calmini gears are a little lower ratio but are $300 more, unless they bring back the $999 special.

Maybe at sea level the gearing difference is not a concern.

I've loved my Calmini gears. Steve originally had a higher ratio at GOX, but after being in Ouray for a couple days, decided to go with a lower gearing. the original did not require triming of the tranycase housing.

The difference is a couple more payments. Hell, your already dropping a few hundred, what is three more?

I really don't understand how 3.92 compared to 3.7 really makes that big of difference? Maybe it really does, I don't know that much about gears. We are talking a .22 difference. Its a 6% difference for 30% more cash. Also, someone on NOR (I have to look it up, I think it was porsche) said that trimming is still required on the AC kit.

Yes, I already am dropping a few hundred but that 300 more could be well used on some skid plates.

Yeah, but last year they went on sale and were back ordered. That didn't do me any good when I wanted them for GONE.

I do however see a gear instal Mod day comming in the future. :bannana:

Calminis aren't $1300 right now. Allphase has a sale for 10% off any Calmini product and they are regularly $1165, which comes to $1048.50 if my math is correct. Obviously you pay tax too, but it's close to the $1000 sale.

Im running the AC gears and IMHO they are low enough.
They still require trimming of the T-case just like the Calminis. They are awesome in the rocks and off camber trails.Im very happy with them and dont see why you would want to go any lower. It seems like 3rd gear 4L feels like 1st gear 4L stock.

I need to purchase the calmini kit because i refuse to run the 6 cly engine. So i am one of the people along with kevin pushing for more people to buy from calmini. Dave and vaughn (allphase) where talking about getting the cost close to 1000 bucks. However Calmini was not budging very much cause well they need a bigger group to influence them. I've been to calmini their powdercoating and customer service sucks. But it's all we got or well all i've got cause AC doesn't have a set for my 4 banger. Calmini also has the slip yolk eliminator needed for our sas's, so come on people contact Kev or Allphase so we can all get a good discount. The more we order the cheaper it will be!!!!!!!

I will give em a call tommorrow and if they are the 1165 price then I would like to move sooner rather than later and not have to worry about availability.

Well I am kinda hoping that Allphase will get word about the goneMOAB sale and be able to pre order or reserve them... but if they have cut the price right now then I say we go for it ASAP.

Here's the link on Allphases' site. http://www.allphaseoffroad.com/products.html?id=338

I'd assume their deal is good for 10% off that price.

The sale price is $1,165.00. 10% off $1,295.00.

I wonder if they add shipping to the Calmini prices. A front bumper for $570, I'll go for that.

I think it was in 2001 that Nissan went to a lighter duty chain in the tcase... I know an "axle pimp" that can get the older tcases with the better chain... :moon:

Actually, I would prefer to get a second tcase and install the gears in that one. The less my truck is apart the better. It would also allow me to take my time and not have to take time off. How much for a tcase in good condition?

I didnt realize AC doesnt make em for the 4banger.....I guess you have no choice.I havent had any real bad service from calmini but then again all I have bought from them is my lockright.

I was able to save at least 400 bucks by going with AC,since I live in Cali I'd be payin taxes also.It was $1,000 compared to $1,400..

Its not that hard to install the gears. I have done 4 of them. 3 of them I did in one day. That included pulling and installing the case. The SAS trucks are fastest. But 2 were lifted IFS trucks.

I need another set one day for my 92. I was hoping to catch the moab special again.:bannana: I need other stuff first though, like tires, rims, axles, R&P gears.

Here is the email I just got from Calmini,

"Sir-

At this time there are no set plans to run our Rockcrawler gears on
sale. Please watch the website for possible updates on the pricing. Thank
you for your interest in the CALMINI Nissan line.

Best Regards,
CALMINI Products Mfg. Inc.

Maybe someone with an inside with Steve can get the special. If they don't go on special I don't know if I'll be able to get them before Gone.

Nissanclay

Thats prolly the way I'll go. I've been reading around and the calmini's just seem like a better buy. But not worth the 300 more. The AC's don't come with new bearings and there was something else but I can't remember. It will most likely be late March early April when I buy, maybe they will decide its a good idea to run the special.

I ordered my gears from AC 2 weeks ago. They said it'll be a little longer before they get them in. Sucks. Paying that much money for something you have to wait for, especially when i waited so long already to order them, is frustrating.

Remind me when you do. I might get in on it then. I'm still unsure which ones I will choose. Maybe i'll be the black sheep and get the AC. Kevin what do you mean "when its all said and done they are the same price?" I know that new bearings might be required with the AC gears but what else?

Pretty sure it's the install, when all said and done for $1200-$1300 installed for AC gears, you may as well spend the extra $300 on the Calmini's and get a lower crawl ratio. However, with the Calmini gears and a manual tranny the gears will chatter going down the road a bit (doesn't happen with the auto tranny) whereas the AC gears will not.

Nissanclay
03-07-2007, 10:47 AM
Yeah but I could really use that extra 300 for some skid plates. Most likely I'm going to do the install myself. I plan to get a tcase from a donor vehicle and take my time on the install.
