Any CB with an external top mounted antenna will outperform the handheld FRS Radios.

Never seen an antenna like that.

Have a look here to the CB SUPER STORE... http://www.walcottcb.com/

onlyonedr had one of those window mount antennas on his truck for a while and it worked pretty good, but did not have great range. we actually just replaced it with a 3' firestick late last week.

The radio is a good one, Also check out the cobra 75, its an all in the mic style like that, I ve had lots of experience with them and they work well.

As far as the antenna Id go with some thing else, a fire stick is cheap and gets good range, if your dont like it sticking up all the time get a QD for it. You will be much happier.

Hey everybody -- I think this is my first post here. I've got an '88 Pathfinder with 33" Trxus MTs, and I'm up in the Rocky Mountain region of Canada.

Window-mount CB antennas tend to kind of suck for range. If you're just using it on a trail where you can probably see everyone else in your group, it's probably fine, but solid-mount ones will always work better. Either one is better than FRS, but GMRS will probably outperform a window-mount (although I've heard that GMRS requires a license in the US).

Hey Stainless, welcome! and thanks!

Thanks everyone else for there input too!

I thought FRS and GMRS were only the 2 way radios?

Also I was at radio shack yesterday talking to two of there sales people there and they said that their window mount was just as good as any other type as long as you mount it where most of the antenna is above the roof. Here is radio shacks version:

Also as far as runnign the wires (in general) do you guys just run them under the carpet or is there a better way to do it?

thanks

John - I've never met a salesperson at any Radio Shack anywhere I've been in one that actually knew what they were talking about.

I got a blank stare when I asked the ones here where their CB antenna mounts were located.

AFAIK - Radio Shack doesn't sell any other type of antenna in-store so I'm sure that's why theirs was "just as good".

If they knew anything about RF do you think they'd be working at Radio Shack?

Also, the window mount is fine until you tear the adhesive off the first time you brush against a tree. :twocents:

My wires are above the carpet. I'm ghetto like that.

A fish tape is a wonderful thing.

So you just pulled it under the carpet rather than take the carpet out, lay it down, the put the carpet back in type of thing?

I haven't yet, but that is the idea yes. Actually, half of it will be run behind the plastic side paneling in the rear, then it will come in from that, between the back seats towards the console area and from the console routed to where the CB is at.

Have fun with that, The padding under the carpet is a pain in the arse to pull things through fish tape or no fish tape. Thats how mine was originally run and I got noise from the fuel pump. The best way I found was to run it down the side of the driver's side of the truck. All you have to do is take off the molding and push it under. It works pretty good that way actually and everything gets hidden

Well I was going to run it on the driver side - where is the fuel pump at? I thought it was further back or is it like right under the 2nd row seats? If it's under there then yeah I'll probably just run it along the side.

the fuel pump is in the tank itself. That access hatch under the passenger seat is where it is exactly. I would definitely run it down the side

Thanks for the feedback on the radio Chainsaw. I'm considering the same radio because it can be disconnected from cables in the vehicle and used as a handheld. I'm sure it won't get the distance/performance with the small rubber duck antenna, but probably still better than yelling.

Mister Tinkle i just comented on what you said on that other thread about CBs. From what i hear its a good radio if you get a good antenna for it.

Funny - at lunch I saw a blazer or something that had 5 of those window mount antennas all over it.
