I plan on bringing my dog to GONE. However, I drive a KC Frontier. I want to find a safe way to secure her in the truck. Around town she rides behind the passenger seat but she has limited room and I don't want her bouncing into the front seat. I was planning on doing a crate in the back but I need to find a way to cool it. I have a sliding rear window and want to find a way make it so a window in the crate of something lets her stick her head in window. Also, I need a way to cover it (the window and entire crate) if it rains.
The bigest thing is keeping her cool. She has short hair, stands about 19" at the shoulders and weighs 45lbs. Here is a pic, its turned sideways but its to late and I'm to tired to fix it.

Without going the crate route, could you build her a padded cell so to speak? The bottom should be level and carpeted to give her good grip. Then, with some large sections of foam, make the area behind the front seat padded so that even if she bounces around she won't get hurt. That should be more open for cooling. Just a random idea though.

i thought about bringing my dog too, but probably won't because a 4x4 trail in a truck is hard on a dog. i usually lethim run along outside but with the number of trucks there I don't think that would be safe. hey make harnesses for jeeps that allow the dog to stand up inside and move around, but keep him in the seat. here you go, maybe this is an option

You are spot on this point. Dogs must be on a leash at all times. There are a few reasons for this. The most important of them is the safety of the dogs and the drivers. Over the years I have I seen folks that let their dogs run loose. The dogs will walk in front of a truck that is working around a part of the trail and has to stop so the dog doesn't get run over.
Secondly we are going to be in some sensitive areas were you are not supposed to walk (little lone drive) off trail.
See you in Moab!

I know you will be more responsible then the people Alex and I saw at carnage. They where running buggies up and down carnage with thier dog running loose. He was a smart dog and for most of the time kept his distance. However at one point close to the waterfall the buggy got high centered. The dog came up to the buggy and was not seen by the driver. Alex saw the whole incident but the dogs head got squeezed between the rock and the 40" tire. The dog seemed ok even after it yelped but Alex was surprised it survived and wasn't bleeding from the ears..... I'm not saying you'd let this happen it's just something we witnessed recently.

just to clarify, i usually only let him run outside when we are well into the woods, usually on a camping trip. we are usually moving along, not stopping for obstacles, and he just runs with his brother about 15ft off the trail. when we slow down, he comes closer, and usually he jumps back in cuz he's tired. i would never let him run loose at carnage, just so people know i am not a bad dog owner.

I dont think you are a bad dog owner. When I get a dog this spring i hope he will run around outside the truck when we are on easy trails, like on the way up to camping sites, with only a couple other rigs. I think that is normal, its just when people let the dogs out on trail like carnage that kinda makes me mad. I mean hell, that dog probably camoe an inch from dying that day

Dogs are a bad idea in Moab. The animal will be very uncomfortable and will damage the fragile environment if he gets loose. Dogs are part of the reason environmental groups are trying to close the trails altogether. Doggie-doo has become a serious problem in these places.

At gone taking care of the environment has always been important. I have ssen many people bring there pets in years past without any issues. Its required to keep them on a leash and I know I'm not the only one that would not hesitate to call someone out if they did not clean up after there dog. You're right though that some people don't care and it only takes one person to ruin everything.
