View Full Version : Xterra Electrical Bugs

So the good guys at Woodmen Nissan got my X running again but I now have a few other electrical bugs that are making my head hurt.
First one: windshield wipers are stuck on. I can get them to speed up but when the steering column switch is in the "off" position they are still going. I pulled the fuse for now. Is this just a problem with the column switch or a relay or something else?
Second: I have no running/interior/gauge lights. Checked all the fuses (#29 at the hood fuse-box according to the FSM) abd they are good. I would imagine a relay is bad somewhere but don't know where to find it. Head light come on OK.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan

Your dimmer switch is really really hard to move. Try harder. I am not being a smartass. I noticed it was behind the roll bar, and it was kind of stuck. Just try moving it up.

Yeah, tried moving that and forth a couple of times, nothing happened. Also doesn't explain the running/marker lights are not on.

What year is your X? Equipment like a bumper or the lot? Heard mention of a cage.

Running lights and dash... check the Tail fuse under the hood.
With the bumper on that truck I dont know if the front lights were wired. Stock units had a short on the front side marker lights just behind the bumper sometimes.

Actually, on the wiper motor.
There's no relay. Looking at the switch, it looks like the motor stop switch inside the motor is bad or isn't getting the ground signal.
Check the black wire off the motor and make sure it's connected to ground.
Also, you might check ground E54, below the wiper motor itself. Make sure it's tight. That ground is shared and might be the cause of a gremlin or two.
The fuse for the tail lights is under the hood, #39, a 15amp one.

HAHA C'mon Allen this is your old rig!!!:D
Good call on the wiper motor not being grounded. Sometimes the motor will stop for a few seconds and start up again. I didn't know how Nissan wiper motors worked but does sounds like a ground issues.
As far as the lights. I checked all the fuses and they are good. the fuse box is missing the cover however. Does anyone have a figure which labels the fuses so I can be sure of what fuse I am looking at?
Thanks again.

OH SHIT!
Probably the switch in the column for the wipers then. They're not designed to get wet and corrosion is probably your gremlin. I never packed the switches with di-electric grease. Always a plan, always had beer to drink.
The fuse for the lights... under hood, closest to the fender, 3rd slot from the left of the 100 amp unit.

X3 on ground issues concerning the wipers, like Allen said before he changed his mind. ;)

Definitely not the fuse. must be the switch. I'll keep digging...

When you turn the headlights on, do the tail lights come on too?

Nope, just the head lights

Is there power at the fuse?

Very little 300mV. there must be a problem with the switch.
Thinking about replacing the column switch with a toggle anyways.

Yeah, I would check the wiring prior to the fuse, sounds like a frayed wire.
