I have a used h233b axle out of a 02 xterra with 4.9s in them and I wanting to swap the ring and pinion onto my h233b axle in my 93 pathfinder. the 4.9s have less than 47k miles on them. would I have any problems with noise?

I want to say Packman did the same thing on his but I cannot recall.

Do you have 4.9s for the front diff too? Just wondering.
You shouldn't have any issues with noise...my '02 with 4.9s don't make a bit of noise with ~70k miles on 'em. This is all assuming that the gears are set up on your 3rd member correctly.

just swap the third members.....

from what i've heard as long as you break your gears in correctly you will not experiance any pitted hypid gear noises. Old or new the break in is the same use this ring and pinion manufacturers guidelines.
go to technical help then differential care and break in

yea if the axles have the same spline count and the yolk is the same that would be easy...

i did the same thing, but my truck has only moved about 30 feet since then. i don't think it will be an issue as long as you get it set up right, and the ring and pinion are both from the same axle, which it sounds like they are.

Thanks for the lil boost of confidence :)

they should be the same just swap the thirds unless ur pathfinder is 31 spline but then just swap the axles too.

the only reason i swapped the r&p instead of the 3rd was because i wanted to keep my packed LSD. now I have a lockright, so it will need to happen again sometime. the gears work fine i'm sure, i just haven't dirven them very far, it's the rest of the truck that doesn't go.

I currently have a lock rite locker in my axle and It's not compatible with the 33 spline H233b, thus the reason why I'm swap the ring and pinion. Also, I have disk brakes vs the drum brakes on the Xterra axle. Hmm... I'm starting to wonder ifyou could swap my disk brakes onto the xterra axle.........

thats what im doing on my xterra

Your 93 has 31 spline axles and the 02 will have 33 spline axles so you will need to do more then just swaping the thirds.

You have two options...

1. Put your carrier in the 02 housing. This way you will only need to set side to side gear mesh. You will not have to set the pinion depth. the only drawback is you will be losing your rear ABS. The pinion part of the center chunk will be just a little different because it will be missing the ABS sensor...but im told it still bolts up.

2. Swap the 02 gears into your third. This will most likely require re-setting the pinion depth...but your abs will still work.

One more thing....the 02 axles will not work in your housing, they are longer. You would need to find some 99 fronty axle shafts to use the 02 carrier.

But why would you want to do that if you allready have a 31 spline locker.

I run an Xterra third (4.90) with a Pathy carrier. I lost the ABS, otherwise it has worked wonderfully.

i lost my abs when i dropped the axle with it still hooked up.

Interesting fact to know! I did not know that. So I can just swap my '93 Lock Rited carrier into the '02 third member and just set the gear mesh. Roger. That just saved me lots of time with setting the ring and pinion.

Are the bearings the same between the two third members? I was planning on reusing the Xterra's carrier bearings since they're newer.

I used the Pathy bearings. Don't know if I have ever seen a set go bad.

Lets make sure we are thinking the same thing.... 02 third member and ring/pinion...Pathy carrier and lockright.

Your carrier as it is will fit into the Xterra third member. Just put the 4.90 ring on it.

Roger that :) I'm just looking at the FSM right now. I want to say you could probably retain the ABS sensor. I'm not at home so I can't compare the two thirds but from the pictures in the FSM, it just looks like the flange for the two are different.

Ryan, it sounds super easy. So the only necessary thing I have to do is adjust the side bearing adjusters?

Ryan Gee

Yes on the side adjusters. I think the pinion will fit into the pathy third. It didn't really bother me much losing the ABS. I think I felt it work once in about 250K of Pathy driving.

yes that is exactly what i did too. my 3rd is from a fronty, it just has my pathy carier in it with 4.9 ring. the pinion never moved.

Have yall guys tried swapping out the ABS sensors between the 3rd members?

I have the same question Cuong. I got my 2003 Xterra 4.9 diff. Debating to even bother with keeping the ABS now. I love my abs on the truck. Since is empty allot and we get allot of rain here.

The Pathy is so rear heavy it may not be that bad. I do want to try to get the ABS working again if possible.

Packman5280

nope didn't bother with abs.

I got the 4.9 swapped along with the abs sensor. I could've use the xterra abs sensor and just spliced the wires but my sensor was missing/broke off already.

I just ended up swapping the carriers for the pathy. I did reuse the 03 new looking bearings. I removed the ABS computer when I installed the CB in its spot. Apparently 93 is the first year of the ABS ecu under the seat. My 92 was under the radio.

I drove in the rain the other week and did some aggressive stops in the parking lots. Stops xlnt. I think I can live without ABS in the pathy.

yeah granted that the ABS probably doesn't function much in our vehicles but I just like to have that little sense of safety. Wasn't much to swap it out either. :) I wanted to reuse the carrier bearings but I would've damaged them trying to remove them.

Thats cool that it fits. I still have a few H233b abs thirds. I used a 2 jaw puller in the side bearings. There is notchs to allow easy removal. The Dana is allot harder to remove.

All I thought of using was a bearing separator. I saw the notches though but never thought of using a 2 jaw puller though. Nice to know if I ever do it again :)
