View Full Version : Steering issues....still

Well most of my issues with my front end went away when Ian and I rebuilt my steering but I am still having some issues. I get a god amount of bumb steer and at higher speeds say 40mph+ the truck is really floaty in its steering response. My ball joints seem to be fine and I have had a very recent alignment at bear frame and axle. Also, I have about 2" of play in my steering wheel before my pitman arm even moves. Is that a normal amout of movement? I did have a leak in my steering box a while back that went away on its own. Is it possible I need to replace my steering box? I was also thinking I would pick up a steering stabilizer and see if that helps. Anyone have idea on what my problem is?

you should be able to adjust the slop in the gear box. there is a nut with a headless screw (flattip). loosen the nut and tighten or loosen the screw as needed. if it runs out of adjustment a rebuild or just replace is necessary.

don't tighten that screw too much, you'll mess up the box. do it like a 1/4 turn at a time.

I didn't know that, I'll give it a try. Thanks

No biggie, I was at the junk yard and need some d44 axle help. Ryan ended up calling me back and helping me out. I have a new axle on the way. As Ryan described it, it sounded like the right kind of axle. I still want someone to look at it before I start cleaning it up.
Back to the topic do you think that the steering box is the issue or am I missing something? Is a steering stabilizer worth my money?

That's a lot of steering wheel movement. Is there any chance something didn't go back together well during the body lift? I didn't work on the steering part, your dad mostly did that stuff. I'm wondering if the rag joint has bolts coming loose or something.
If you mess with the adjusting screw on the steering box, mark its original position so you can get back to where you're at now if it makes things worse in any way.

Yeah everything is tight the extra movement is definetly from the box.
Does the adjuster screw take a allen wrench? I took a peak today and the top of the box has 4 bolts on each corner and one in the middle with what appears to be a lock nut with a allen top. It that what I need to adjust?

Yeah, the one in the center with the locknut is the adjuster. I've heard of people screwing up their steering by messing with that, so definitely adjust it a little at a time.

yeah, and I think the older ones had a slot for a flat head screwdriver. just go a 1/4 turn then lock it back down, then drive it for a day and see how it it worked. brent had a write up on it, i think on n4w.
