Well another SAS has started. My new 92 Pathy bone stock. looks tiny with its stock little 31s compared to SAS SUA with 33s.

OK I got the Ballistic Fabrication coil buckets on. The fit perfectly on the drivers side. On the right side I had to bend the high pressure power steering hard line out of the way.
I also mounted the frame track bar mount. The coil bucket and mount gusset it each.

Made the lower links from 2" .250 wall tube. So big a Titan can fit inside!
http://nissannut.com/projects/SAS_3link/links/lnks_titan_size.jpg
Used a custom template. A sharpie.
http://nissannut.com/projects/SAS_3link/links/link_template.jpg
There the same size. Wow!
http://nissannut.com/projects/SAS_3link/links/link_compare.jpg
Now press in the j joints. I love these things.
http://nissannut.com/projects/SAS_3link/links/link_jjoints.jpg
polyperformace link mounts. Very nice.
http://nissannut.com/projects/SAS_3link/links/link_frame_mount.jpg
Found a nice spot on the double wall frame.
http://nissannut.com/projects/SAS_3link/links/link_frame_prepare.jpg
Pre welded all the gussets on.
http://nissannut.com/projects/SAS_3link/links/link_frame_ready.jpg
Just tack on frame rail when the axle is centered.
http://nissannut.com/projects/SAS_3link/links/link_frame_tacked.jpg
Some temp coils for a test fit.
http://nissannut.com/projects/SAS_3link/links/mockup_front.jpg
Now for the upper link and tarck bar.
http://nissannut.com/projects/SAS_3link/links/mockup_driver.jpg
Between currie j joints and ballistic and poly performance mounts this is going to gether nicley.

Nice. what caster u goin' with?
NissanNut
03-21-2007, 06:16 AM
Thanks Guys.
Caster will be 6-8. I have the same on the D21. The pinion angle is at 20deg. The pumpkin is limited on up travel so I like a good angle and full droop.
So Ryan what springs you running front and rear?
I ordered the Datz510 springs. Bronco 5.5 superflex for the front. Yet to see them. Can I run those in the rear? I want it low as possible.
Ryan Gee
03-21-2007, 08:22 AM
I run the James Duff (http://www.jamesduff.com/eb/suspension_components.html) 5.5 coils.
In the rear I run Rustys offroad 9 inch coils (http://rustysoffroad.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=rustys&Product_Code=ROR850&Category_Code=COILS).
With my rear detroit taking a dump, things are going to change there. The front is going to change a little too.
We are about to start an Xterra SAS that looks alot like yours only different!
If the rear ends up being to tall, you can always cut a little coil off.

I almost bought those XJ 9" coils. They were on sale for $120. I created an account and everything. I was afraid they may be too soft. People said XJ coils are too small.
With the Pathy at ride height on jack stands. It looks like I need a longer frt spring than rear. My frt bucket is adjustable. 5" of movement.
Got any pix of the Xterra SAS? I could not find anyone building radius arms with j joints.:(

Thanks. I have been thinking about a coil setup for a long time. Finally decided to tackle it head on. I learned allot of the SUA and SOA SAS jobs.
There similar colors at a distance. I was told the Pathy was green. But its bluish grey per Nissan. Blue int. Truck is green with grey int. I want to paint both black. Or truck Red and Pathy black. Thats another project though.

Ever consider going with just one upper link?
Not really. I did consider a 3 link.
I am going to reverse the upper links. Put the joint at the lower link point. Some say there will not be enough flex.
Do you have any pix of your setup? Yours looked real good.
theking
03-23-2007, 12:16 AM
Yeah, I went with the typical three link setup. In hindsight, I'd change a few things to optimize the geometry, like staighten out the upper link more, kick out the lower links and a passenger side highsteer with a taller trackbar mount on the axle. Anyways, for more flex i think you should just go with just a single upper link like mine. The radius arm setup will bind up.

Very cool. I like the rear links. Thanks for the pix. I have seen lots of pix on n4w and ac. Nice work!
I like the idea of redundant upper links. Thats why I want to get a radius arm to work. This will be my daily driver.
I ordered more j joints. I plan to have the upper link hinge of the lower. Like a TJ long arm. But for now I put one knuckle on and started the steering. Need to get steering on so I can finish the track bar. Then I can finally do a flex test with different radius arms setups.

5.5lift for 74 bronco coils, 1.5 lift pathy coils and stock coil.

Well the radius arms dont flex at all. If I try to make them flex. The spot welds pop. So I tore it all apart and relocated some stuff.
I did take both link mounts off and modify them. I moved them in 1". I have 33" clearance but I want to run 35s one day with no rubbing.
Going to make the upper links longer. If that dont work. Will make it a real 3 link + panhard.
Any ideas?? Will longer uppers work?

Steering and trackbar are looking good.
Radius arms will always want to twist the axle, unless you have an infinitely long arm. 3 link is the only way to go.

You might get some decent flex if you replace one of the j joints on the upper links with rubber bushings. Maybe the top links off another pathy. Just an idea. But, i don't think you'll be satisfied until u go with with the 3link.

I have yet to see another 3 link nissan. I basically had my mind made up when i bought my axle. The guy had an 02 Taco with the Allpro kit and i was impressed. Plus i saw the flex on Actionjackson's LandCruiser! The only thing i would change is maybe making the upper link mount taller. i read somewhere the rule of thuimb is 1/3 or 1/4 the tire diameter. I'm well short of that. There is alot of force on that link when you hit the brakes!
By the way, your website (nissannut.com) helped me tremendously, too.

Packman5280
04-10-2007, 08:23 PM
no, not using the old lowers as uppers. i'm just using ryan's jig, but by his math the lowers would have to be munch longer than they are to keep the same ratio as stock, and i could see how they would hit the crossmember with how we both have the links inboard of the frame rails. haven't lengthened the rear drive shaft, not sure how that will work though.

The only items I have not ordered that I know I need are 3 shocks. I will post it up later today. This will make it drivable. No frt gears or driveshaft in the budget yet.
I just decided on the upper link mount today. Been trying different mounting ideas and locations. The new mount is almost done. Just going to add some more gussets before I weld to the frame.
I took a break from the front end and got one rear link fabbed and installed. Also finally added some needed outlets to the garage here and there. So much to do. Also had to make a new pitman for the SUA. Underneath was hitting the sway bar.

I miss the days when i would have been happy with 33's. I'm jealous. Pathy looks so nice with everything intact. I really like that color too.

Thanks Guys. Yeah the Gold one is SUA. That is Lmr81s. I plan to run 35s. But I got a great deal on these 5 33s from My buddy mudman. He went up to 36s.

I guess I forgot this thread. I ran into problems with the axle shafts. I had to use an angle grinder to remove the rusty carrier. And change the u joints. Then I realized my free shafts were 3" too long. So I was running out of time. I bought some Yukon chromolys and reused the stock outer stubs. Well I made a driveshaft from a jeep XJ, $30 off ebay. Drive it around at 45mph in 4wd. Then 2 days later drove out to Hot Springs AR. I also lowered the rear 2.5" and frt 1.5.
Here is my new daily driver:

Wow, that is another amazing rig man. I love the pic with the 3 badass customized nissans and then the stock one....it really gives me a perspective as to how small and not-so-badass mine is =P. Only pathfinder I have seen with all the work is Packman's, and that was in the dark on a cold snowy night. How long and how much money did that take you to do? Wanna do mine for me? :roflmao:

Thanks guys, I bought the pathy in March. Work on it a few hours here and there. Plan was to build a family friendly version of my truck. I have two kids. I normally take one at a time wheeling. I have about 3-4k + the $1800 purchase price. in the pathy right now. That is the sas, long arm rear, cb, timing belt, locker, tune up, rims etc. Tires were free.
Trying to get it ready for Moab 2008.
Since I cant help everyone build up there Nissans. I try to document what I have tried and what works and what dont.

So you have about 3-4K invested in the SAS? That's including the axle and everything?

Slickrock was pretty good. I have never been to any others in that area. It would be nice if they had wireless internet near the cabins. We had to walk up to the office everyday with laptops to get online. It was rough.:roflmao:
Ben and Clay were there. I forget the other CO xterra. I am open to suggestions.

Yep. I just checked my spreadsheet. about $3500 for the SAS. Prices vary widely with SAS. So many new and used parts. I splurged and spent $250 on chromolys because my dana 44 came with no shafts. But it had more than the other axle. It had calipers, steering, manual hubs etc. I did not use the steering or hubs. But could have.

With such an extensive project it seems like it would be so much more expensive. I guess I might be doing a SAS in the far future =P.

Yeah it had a hole in the muffler, broken AC when I bought it. Super clean inside. I had to buy a $30 dash vent thats all.
I would love to wheel in the CA deserts I use to ride in. My Sisters kids ride atv and dirt bikes out there now.
