Well it's about time i make my truck look like the expensive rig it is....
So junked the Bed which was getting too much rock rash as is. Tomorrow I will meet with one of the Nissan guru's so we can rebrace the frame and place the pathy tank. I thought about posting everything once i finished but changed my mind. So i will post as I go, in the end it should look nothing like this......

Crew cab or extended? Sounds sweet, I'd like to do something like that, only to a Pathy, someday! (excab/allpro style bed). Are you going to bob the frame up to the shackles? Are you bending the tube yourself, getting the AllPro kit, or having a shop build the flattie for you? I've thought about doing the tube bed on my HB, but don't have quite enough rock rash there to warrant it. Keep us posted, I can't wait to see this finished!

Extended cab D21 i already have the body in my back yard... I've always had a shop do my work so i plan on doing this build with friends. Yes we will bob it back to the shackes. I cannot use the allpro kit because the bed will only be 40 inches once the extended cab is on. And well between Alex, Ryan, Jeremy, cameron, and I we will bend the Dom tubes and build it better then any shop. Although I do plan on having alphase do the Big hoop that sits behind the cab...

Sounds like a great plan. I love the King Cabs. Just the right amount of room.
I use my bed too much to bob it. 8' lumber/drywall etc sticks out almost 1' as is with the gate down.

Thanks i really appreciate the comments. I owe Alex, Cameron and Ryan soo much for all the help and time they put into this on sunday. If there is something about my truck i hate it's the rear springs. I really want to go quarter elipticle but don't have the 1000 extra bucks before gone moab to do it. The rear is the only thing keeping me from gaining the 1000 points i want on the RTI ramp. Does anyone here understand leaf spring geometry well enough to recommend a cheap fix.
Alex Topousis
03-27-2007, 07:14 AM
its kinda dangerous and the type of wheeling you do would double that danger but you could try revolver shackles until you can afford 1/4 eliptical. I wouldnt ever use them but it is an option

I'm not positive, but I think Lance may have a leg up on spring stuff. I know he's a guru on shock stuff (man's a genius there!).
NissanNut
03-27-2007, 07:43 AM
Looks great. You guys do nice work.
That tank may help the springs. You want weight after the axle to compress them. Try putting some more weight on or after the axle. Thats why I have my spare and hi lift were they are. These trucks are very light in the rear stock. Once you build a flat it might be ok. I would test again before changing springs.
Ryan Gee
03-27-2007, 08:20 AM
He is about to gain the weight of the cab and the flat bed. I agree with Barry.
Giancarlo93
03-27-2007, 04:12 PM
Ok, very dumb question, what is the pourpose of changing the gast tank?
Alpine Spirit
03-27-2007, 04:20 PM
Well eventually if you plan on doing a 4 link rear the stock tank is in the way.
theking
03-27-2007, 05:19 PM
Curley, you should try dual shackles.
CurleyMan
03-27-2007, 05:40 PM
The first reason i lost the stock tank was that it was leaking. The stock tank also only held 15 gallons this one holds 21. As far as advantages there are many weight in the rear is one and space for the battery is another. The only problem i have with the tank is that my fuel guage doesn't work now. I'm assuming that this has to do with the electrical signals being different between the pathy computer and hardbody. Another possibility is that the signals are different between the 6 and 4 cyl tanks. If this is the case i will need to trade pumps or ECU units...
As far as the rear springs they need more weight to flex better no doubt there. However even when they have weight they don't do as well as the front. Once everything is built i'll test it if im still hurting i'll take a spring out. If that doesn't fix it i'll use dual shackles or revolvers for moab. ANd then it's probably gonna be air shocks or quarter eliptical. Air shocks are prone to problems and need to be recharged. Quarter elipticals are difficult to set up and i'd only let one shop do them (avalanche engineering). Both require suspention winches and mo money....
I think the only way to solve this problem is to build the truck and then put it on the ramp. I'll post pictures of the springs the drrop, rise and length limits i have then we can revisit this question. It's too hard to explain right now without pictures...
NissanNut
03-27-2007, 05:50 PM
The fuel sender does not talk to the ECU. Only the gauge in the dash. I know the truck is about 4ohm full, 90 empty. The pathy should be similar. I guess I could test mine if needed.

Giancarlo93
03-27-2007, 07:14 PM
Ok, thanks for the info.
My pathfinder is 4 cylinder and my gas tank is 15 gallons and has no computer.
Is a carburated engine.
Is a very simple engine, it only uses 4 spark plugs instead of 8 like the fuel injected ones.
By the way i am openning the engine and doing a 100% overhaul.
Pistons .20, I bought a new cam mid range, new headers, besides all the new parts you have to put when yo do an overhaul.
I was loosing compresion in piston #4, the engine only has 165 thousand km.
Hey btw your car sounds likes is going to look very good when its finished, like I told Ryan, I want a SAS badly in my truck but I dont trust nobody here to do it, I guess im gonna have to pay the plane ticket to somebody to come here to Panama:)

03-27-2007, 07:29 PM
Thanks man for what it matters i did alot of research before I did my sas. Alot of small things needed to be fixed like my winch and other 4x4 related parts. I took the truck and winch to every shop i wanted to try. The one who took the winch took way to long and they where sloppy and unappreciative. The shop who put my previouse lift in charged me way too much and took to long. I did this (using small repairs to see who i liked) for about a year until i found the one I liked. They still didn't do everything perfect but they where easy to deal with and fixed what i didn't like so I was very happy in the end.

Should be 2 wires for gauge. B black is ground. Y/G is for gauge.
Y is yellow I think, g is green. Yellow with a green stripe on truck. Connect this to y/pu. Yellow with a purple stripe.

The winch and radiator are off for the time being. I wish i could put the radiator in the back and rebuild the front so it would be shorter. However the guy who has put his radiator in the back would kill me if I copied him :).

So the stinger support and shock hoop are going to be the base for the tubed front clip. I think it will work very well but i also think it may end up a little ugly. Which is fine cause i'm not very good lookin anyway...

Looks great! It will be easy to work on the engine stuff without those stupid welded on inner fenders. I opened my holes on the truck for header access. I would love to make those removal. I was thinking about one day doing a tube over the radiator like the jeeps do, just in case.

With the front clip gone I now no longer have any of the rotten east coast body. Wow, weird.
I think it'd be cool to see you reuse the fenders, even pinched a lot I think it'd help make your truck look recognizable as a Nissan. If you don't it's just a frame with a Nissan cab on it, and you might as well run with no body and lots of tube. Which would be cool as well, I just kinda think the cab being the only body on there looks kind of half-done.

I'll explain more when I get my door locks fixed but the wiring harness doesn't work. I have a 1986.5 truck with a 1988 cab with what looks like totally different wiring. Why is this they where both 4cyl trucks?
NissanNut
04-29-2007, 08:31 PM
I know the ECU codes are tbi wiring is different from 86.5 and 88. Nissan only made a 86.5 and 88 FSM. Not such thing as a 87 fsm.
Whats the issue? You have power door locks? power windows? I have a 88 fsm and 86. The 86 is pure 720 though.
CurleyMan
04-29-2007, 08:59 PM
no power locks, heated mirrors or electric windows. What is FSM? The harness coming off the 88 cab is compleate however the harness on my 86.5 engine seems to be much more involved. (on the 88 cab)I have a bundle of wires coming off the driver side and then another coming off the passenger side. The passenger side is mostly made up of relays. (on the 86.5 body) I have a huge set of wires running from the driver side to the passenger side of the truck. They run infront of the top of the radiator and handle the lights, blinkers, ect. I don't remember seeing this on the 88 truck when Ryan and i popped the cab off. We where very carefull to unclip every part of the harness. What should I do, should I ignore the 86.5 harness and try to adapt the new one?

Were the engines the same (Z24 vs. KA24)? I'd bet that's the difference. 8 spark plugs vs. 4, 2 coils vs. 1, etc..
I'd offer some assistance, but I'm heading down a 9" swap this weekend, with a master cylinder conversion to boot.

I think KA started in 90. I put a 87 z24i engine in my 85 720 (z24 carb). I had problems becuase the harness was an 88+. I had to swap TBIs. One was 6 pin one was 8 or something.
I would use the original 86.5 if possible, since the engines is 86.5. But I do have an 88 wiring harness schematic if needed. I can scan and email.
NissanNut
04-30-2007, 07:00 AM
Also the ecu codes are DIFFERENT from -87 to 88+. One was 33 all clear one is 55.
90 is the ka year. z24i is 86 720--89d21 and other models, stanza, Van etc.

Ok It is the exact same motor z24 with 8 plugs and two coils. I saved my 86.5 ECU but the 86.5 wiring harness is destroyed so I cannot use it. Barry if you have the wiring scematic i'd appreciate a copy. I think I may place the old ecu in my 88 cab and try to hook the 88 harness to my 86.5 truck. Is this my best option?
NissanNut
04-30-2007, 07:27 AM
You may have to. Does the 86.5 ecu plug into the 88 harness?
Do you have the engine harness part of the 86.5? or the 88? If you have both check the TBI connectors. They should be totally different. Mine were.
I will start scanning the pages.

OK so for what it matter I have almost connected the drivers side harness. I am having difficulty with some parts of the harness. I have a cable that goes no-where next to the distributor. I have an o2 sensor and I don't know what cable connects to it. Barry If you either have the schematic or a place where i could find it on line I'd appreciate it. Curleyman, do you still need the wiring diagrams? I am pretty sure I have what you are looking for.
I have an 86.5. With what appears to be an '88 or later TB. It has two wires coming from the throttle body that go nowhere on my harness. My harness has a 6-pin connector where the later models have an 8-pin connector. The two extra wires, if I am not mistaken, are for an idle adjuster. I think it is supposed to work with the power steering or something. The extra two wires are taped up on mine.
Mine runs fine in warm weather, but hates to stay running on cold mornings. I don't know if it is realated or not.
Anyway, if you want, I can email the diagrams to you. Shoot me an email. reserector@mississippi-mud.com

i'm just gonna keep the dana 44's.... when i need new tires i'll start working on the new axles... For what it matters my ideal rear setup would be the isuzu corp 12 bolt or gm corp 14 bolt with an arb and 5.38's... For the front I just need a hp ford d44 and my arb and 5.38's. For a couple of reasons the 61" axle width is bothering me so i'd like the full width 65. The 5.38's would give me the power to turn 40 inch tires and still hit 80 on the highway :)...

Why do you want it without the clutch?
When I did the overhaul in my truck I went to buy a new one and they offer me two models, one with the clutch that cost $240 and then they offer me one without the clutch in $87, trying to be smart, I bought the one of $87 and a new clutch, not OEM, but made in Japan that cost me $20, so I though I made a good deal. I went to install it in the car and the temperature was in the middle all the time when my truck always has been in a quart.
After cleaning radiator and doing all kind of stuff I decided to buy the one that cost $240 and the problem is gone.

You have a V-6 I have a 4 cyl the water pump for the 4cyl is totally different. The v-6 model is sold without or with the clutch the 4cyl is only sold with the clutch.... The reason why I need to loose the clutch is just a clearance issue... Not enough room once the quest fan is placed on the radiator...

Curley - He as a 4cyl....not the V6
Giancarlo - The pump with out the clutch is not sold here. If it is possible to purchase one that would solve curley's issue. The pump from a 280 appears to be identical to the 4cyl one. (plus is is cheaper for some reason) the pully should be easy to find here.....

I had to put the water pump thing on hold because I found a more interesting and pertinent project. I ripped my motor mounts some time this year and must replace them. I could have bought used motor mounts and used the chain link to assure a long life. I opted to purchase toyota 22r bombproof aftermarket mounts... Rockstomper.com sells the beefy units for 40 each or something like that. I will have to deal with two minor problems in order to mount the mounts. The steel brace bolted to the motor needs to be drilled out as rockstomper used a thicker bolt.. One of the base holes is not in the correct spot I will either expand the rockstomper unit or weld a stud to the frame in the appropriate spot...

Yea those nissan mounts suck,it seems like the drivers side is the first to go since it gets lifted upwards by the motor's torque.

Rockstomper used grade 5 bolts and well for a couple bucks I could put longer washer equipped grade 8's in... The other issue was he decided to use a rubber sleeve in-between the poly bushings..

I think everyone here knows metal sleeves are the norm so I found some bronze bushings at ACE and cut them to fit..

Here is the nissan steering box
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m22/curleyben/rebuild/Picture001.jpg
After I moved the axle forward the tie rod was hitting my rear swinging pitman arm. The only way to rectify this was to put a forward swinging box on like the scout 2 box.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m22/curleyben/rebuild/Picture002.jpg
As you can see the pitman arm is super long and pushes the box pretty far back on my frame. Cameron offered to cut, plate and re-weld my pitman arm. It is 11 inches stock Cameron made it 9.

bodyman909
01-12-2008, 08:32 PM
I guess nissan made 2 different pumps and the only way to tell is to take the restrictor off.If it has a seperate flow pin inside then you cant modify it.I experimented with my first pump and drilled out the seperate flow pin and made it worse,so I went to the JY and got another pump off a 88 v6 HB and it had a different restrictor with no flow pin.
I bet you even without Hydro assist,if you just drill out the restictor you'd probably get better steering power..
Adding an oil cooler should help keep the pump and steering box cool and happier too!

Ok so if you go to [http://westtexasoffroad.homestead.com/powersteering.html the nissan pump is kinda similar. It has a piston that is suspended by a spring(2) and (3). I could not disassemble the piston trust me I tried. I tried extending the spring but it seemed to return back to stock length after being compressed. So I took a 10mm snap ring placed it on the bottom of the piston and it should mimic an extended spring.

Do you have a disassmbly diagram for the pump? The diagram for my pump shows an air chisel (with a blunt bit) to take the shaft out. But mine is a vane style pump.
CurleyMan
01-14-2008, 04:50 PM
Well this isn't the shaft!! We both have vane pumps no doubt about that. This is the pressure regulator or pressure release mechanism.. I talked with the guys at Nissan and they don't even have it in the computer. It sits directly below the valve we drilled. Either way I cannot seem to get the bugger apart. So I guess i'll just be happy with the awesome high flow i cranked out of her..

I used all three of them and recently cut the first one off. The new springs alcan made for me allowed more up travel and my yoke was going to hit. However without the first crossmember i have a little too much flex in the frame. I would recommend using it because an exo cage is the only other way I can stiffen up my frame at this point.
