Today Circuit City laid off 3400 store employees. All had an hourly wage greater than 50 cents above the salary cap. I got wind of this last night and spent the whole night freaking out because I have been with Circuit for 7 years and am damn close to that level. Turns out I missed loosing my job today by 50 cents. The other bad part is since I am at the cap I can't get a raise. Kind of a sucky day at work today. Also, one of the people laid of was a geat guy and had been with circuit for 9years. I have worked will him the entire time I've been here.

Here is a link to a story from USA Today.

Anyone know of a good job opening for someone with tons of selling and management experience?

damn, that sucks. glad you kept your job, but they must know that people like you are going to be looking elsewhere, now that you know you can't get any higher. seems like a poor decision, but glad you got through it.

I read the article this morning and wondered how you would fare.

Obviously, they are demonstrating that in their view, the workers can always be replaced by a lower paid version.

Most view their own company as a peddler of a bulk commodity. Self service checkout will be next......

You say that like it's a bad thing. I shop at King Soopers, not Safeway. I shop at Walmart, not Target. Why? Self-service checkouts get my dollars, because they eliminate the need to deal with sub-moronic register drones who think you give a damn about their idle chit-chat.

Corporate America is definitely changing. My Company (HP) offered early retirement to a bunch of people since they were cutting off our future medical and pension benefits. New, lower paid employees will replace them. I'm taking the early retirement (at age 46) and taking my chances in the job market. At least they bribed us with a big bag of money to leave. The same trends - replace higher paid workers and eliminate pension benefits, are everywhere these days. May 31 is my last day at HP, so at least I'll still be able to do GONE since it was scheduled. We'll see what happens with a new job and how that impacts my wheeling this summer.

Glad to see you were spared, Clay, I heard something about CC closing a bunch of stores nation wide and wondered about you.

I think most of the stores are in Canada but just like any company they are closing the stores that are no longer in a good location or profitable. CC has plans to open and relocate 180 new stores nation wide in the next year. No plans for self checkout though sorry Ian. I do like using the self service checkout but not when I'm buying $100+ in food.
