got new leaf packs coming tomorrow but may swap out the main leaf for a custom one that uses 1.5" bushings , since i go thru alot of them
need to re-do the bump stops again so i can lower the truck a bit then its onto the rear axle , think ill try out the grizzly locker

That's how my lockright is. While holding one side you should be able to spin the other. And, with both in the air it should lock. Is it unlocking on the trail?
penski61
10-25-2010, 04:38 PM
i should be able to spin both tires in the same direction with the detroit even with one on the ground (the one side was barely touching), otherwise the locker is kinda useless
plus that loud pop was never there
KovemaN
10-25-2010, 05:01 PM
When you spin a tire by hand the one on the ground should NOT turn, the locker should ratchet like the lock right. When you apply torque to the pinion that is when both should try to turn, even with one wheel on the ground. I would bet if you tried that you will hear the same popping sound though.

Get an ARB and be done with it.
But if you have the 35spline version buy the Spidertrax upgraded locking ring.

yeah i have the 35 spline , what does the locking ring do ?

Fixes some issues with the latest design.
Because of the pilot bearing in a nine inch there just isn't room for a proper size locking ring. My understanding is that as long as you don't slam lock it you should be fine. But I would upgrade it for peace of mind.

There is a local company here in AZ that makes an upgraded locking ring. Beyond Insanity Fabrication. Bill is correct though - an ARB in a 9" def needs an upgraded lock ring. I've seen 2 stock ones where the teeth were completely rounded off.

(2) of the #4 and (1) #3 not sure what the part numbers are for the 35 spline 9" though
eaton lists the parts as central driver assembly and driven clutch assembly(2)

Ok, looks like they are special order items only. I am currently waiting on a price and time frame of when they could show up. I was told it could take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. We shall see, when I find out I will let you know.

Thanks Josh but i went ahead and ordered a grizzly locker , i called eaton this morning and they told me the parts i need would be more than a new locker
if you do end up getting a price let me know
and Koveman yeah it is broken the drive assembly is wore out cause the locker would lock and then slip at 70ft of torque which is less than a 1st gen stock LSD :(
KovemaN

Isn't an automatic locker supposed to ratchet at a low torque when there is no drive power supplied and lock when power is applied? My only experience is with a Lock-Right, but I thought the Detroit was the basis for the locking principle used in those lockers.

ok lets put it this way , the locker was not locking on the trail- it be broken :p

10-27-2010, 09:13 PM
I got that. I was just wondering what the point of failure was. An ARB isn't a whole lot more than a Detroit and I'm trying to figure out which way to go.
penski61
10-27-2010, 09:24 PM
if i could have afforded it i probably would have went with the ARB , but as bill and tim said you need the locking ring to go with it so $700 for the arb plus 200 for the ring , i just couldnt swing it
im pretty sure the locker was a dead before i got it , i was running a detroit in the yota axle with pretty much the same setup minus 37's and never had an issue
i went with the grizzly because its pretty much the same as the detroit but the internals are upgraded and it was $80 less

I blew a Detroit too...
Sorry you had problems with your locker. I hope you have better luck with the Griz!
I made the mistake once of voicing my opinion on mechanical lockers on N4W. LOL.. it turned into a shit show!

Sucks that the ARB for the 9" needs an upgrade out of the box. Have you ever looked into cryo treating any parts? It seems like that might work for the locking ring.

I have an RD99... been setting on the shelf waiting to see when/if ARB comes out with a fix. Probably have to once again support the fine service Spidertrax provides!

the truck is drivable now , somewhat haha
i cant go above 50mph or else the truck shakes violently , so im thinking of getting another rear DS thats not heavy wall and using that for everyday use and using the beatup one i got now that 1/4" wall DOM for the trail
also order new hubs for the front since the right side got bashed and wouldnt engage anymore
superwinch hubs $61 shipped from amazon :)
