Hey all,

Just introducing myself to the forums. My name is Mike and I live in Newfoundland, Canada. I'm fairly new to owning a 1996 Nissan Hardbody V6 and am looking for more information about them.

My first and biggest question is "What kind of mileage can I expect to get out of this truck before it starts to have major trouble? It's got nearly 200,000kms on it now (125,000mi), and I'm wondering if she's got another 100,000 left in her?

From your experience, what kind of lifespan do these 4x4's usually have?

Cheers,

-Mike

First off, Welcome!

Second, things like timing belt condition (when was it last replaced), plugs (are you running NGK stockers, which is best for that motor), fuel filter (have a tendency to get plugged faster with higher mileage due to sediment) and engine condition (any loss of compression due to previous lack of maintenance) will have an impact on the longevity and effeciency of your powerplant.

Running good fuel helps too. You don't have to run premium, or even midgrade, but a quality fuel helps.

I'd say, if you have a solid engine, good compression, and you give her a good tune up using NGK plugs and quality parts, then you could see 300k. Probably get somewhere around 16-18mpg if you don't abuse the throttle.

My hardbody is sitting ay 200,000 miles now, they are tough engines. Allen is 100% correct about the spark plug brand. I had my diesel mechanic do a tune up on the nissan a couple years ago. When I drove it back home it ran worse then before. I tried everything until i noticed they had used champion spark plugs. So I zipped over to Nissan and for 1.50 each i picked up the NGK plugs. It instantly ran smoother then before. I leaned to use NGK plugs and not to trust my diesel mechanic with my japanease truck...

welcome!

hardbodies weren't available in 96 with a v6, at least not in the states. you either have a 95 or a 4 banger, or some silly canadian truck.

Hahaha! Thanks for all the help guys. I'll be sure to check all of those things. Are there any specific places t watch for rust?

And yes, I am a Canadian. Born and raised in a town about 100kms from the Maine border. Now I live in Newfoundland in the furthest East city in North America, St. John's. And man let me tell you, We get more snow than you ever want to drive in without a 4x4! There was about 14' of snow in my front yard two weeks ago. We had a big melt last week when the temperature went up to 1*C (or 33*F). Now there's only about 9' left!

Summers on its way!

Haha, hey JR, Always nice to run into another resident of the Great White North! I lived in Winnipeg for four years back in the day. Lately it seems like everyone in Atlantic Canada is migrating to the West, so who knows where I'll end up in the end. It's hard to resist the call of Alberta, lol!
