Welcome abord.

Glad to here ya cleaned out the X, cause we all know it needed it. Now, you have one project left. Get out the wire brush, and start scrapping the front suspension. Cause no matter what Ty told you, that's not paint, it's rust. Pick your favorite color and paint everything under the truck.

Cheers,
Josh

I cleaned off the rust BEFORE I painted it, damnit!

I'll still be there with bells on.

Welcome!

Rather than going to the expense of regearing the front and rear, I'd spend that money on transfer case gears from Automotive Customizers or Calmini. You'd probably be in for similar money but I think that would make it much more capable. My :twocents: anyway

Transfer case gears will come too but I wanna do the diff gears first for better on road driving as well as off road.

Just buy full install kits when you order your gears. It will probably be overkill but at least you wont be without anything, and it never hurts to have everything changed at the same time.

Pretty sure 5.13's will not make much of an improvement over 4.90's.

wouldnt it help with the speed-o and just normal acceleration of the X?

Bill Potter
12-13-2010, 10:10 PM
On the Speed-o....it would be cheaper to buy a new drive gear.

Yes it would help a little on normal acceleration...but I doubt it's enough to justify the price.

It's the reason many people swap the rear for a D-44. In your case the cost of replacing the ARB doesn't make that such a cost effective idea. Had I not located a cheap ARB for my 233 it would have been replaced long ago.

I thought someone had located 5.38's for the 233...they would work better for you.

Not sure how much skill you have but another option would be switching out the auto for a 5 speed from a junk yard.

Yeah I saw some 5.38s somewhere but wouldn't that give me the top speed of like 55? Haha I'd love to do a 5speed swap but I think that would be out of my skill range with the room I have to work with and stuff

5.38's are perfect! Maybe you don't know this, but your truck came stock with 4.90's on 30 inch tires. For comparison... heeps come with 3.55's...

ChefTyler

Josh, you can also sell those 4.90s fairly easily if/when you replace them.

Rugged Rocks Offroad sells the 5.38's. If I had it to do over again then I would go with those.

If you plan on wheeling it soon, I really agree with the others in that I would also suggest the T-case gears before axle gears. Way more bang for the buck. Just a thought.

Do they really sell them or is it a pipe dream? With the price a guy could buy how many Ford 9 ring and pinions? My last set of Richmond 5.43's was 129 bucks new on Ebay...

I would say live with what you have for now.. have some fun and don't throw cash at anything until ya make at least 5-10 runs...

Things you will probably need none the matter... winch and Synthetic winch cable..Chromo shafts for your front axle.. front bumper.. Throw some cash at those thing to begin with! Everything else works on your rig.. leave it alone for now.

You have to understand.. your rig is built better than most of the vehicles on here. Just figure out what kind a wheelin' floats your boat and buy the accessories for your needs.

As far as acceleration... welcome to Nissan Automatics from that generation. Your best bet is to start looking into a 5 speed. They are geared better for your situation and put up with a lot more abuse.

there are no 5.38's for the h233b it was a concept , and steevo never actually got any from overseas not sure if its gonna happen

as for 55 being top speed , im running 5.42 and 37's and can get up to 75 but only on flat ground haha , 55 up hill is my max

id defiantly do crawler gears before re-gearing , unless your running 37's , 4.9's will do for now

Just remember...we are just trying to point you in a direction that may save you money over the long haul. Please don't jump in to anything. Many people have different ideas of what works and what doesn't for daily drivers.

On the trail I highly doubt that anyone here will tell you that you that adding some kind of low range around 4:1 or better is wasting cash. For this you have a few options and should decided based on your need. After you get an idea on what works and what doesn't you will feel far better on your choice.

As for the lower gears for the daily driver...don't forget you are driving a 4500lb brick...expecting it to do any better then a 4500 lb brick is just plain crazy.

For the highway I looked for a gear that allowed me climb I-70 with the motor at 4500rpm's at 60-65 MPH...right now that is third gear (5 speed) with 4.90's on 37's (and I'm backing off the gas a little). I think Ryan is running 5.38's and he is running fourth gear 60-65 at 4300 rpm's on 38.5's. Both of us can easily run 80+ on I-25 on 37's. In fact I have had the GPS reading over 100 on flat ground.

We have Hardbody D-21's...my understanding is that in an X without the supercharger this is not really possible.

It's really about hitting the sweet spot in the motor 4300-4900 (really any motor) at the speed you want to be able to pull the worst hill you drive.

For your auto I would look at what gears it takes to pull I-70 at 60-65 in second around 4500-5000rpm's...IMO that would give you the best Colorado driving range.

It's a good idea to get a few trail runs under your belt before you start dropping big money. AFAIK there is still a winter run coming up either late jan, or early feb. If there is any way for you to make it out to goneMOAB I would highly suggest it. It will give you a chance to get a real feel for the rig, and let you know what kind of wheeler you are.(heavy right foot, or slow and steady). Tylers old X is setup very well, and you will be surprised what it will do. As far as on road, it will never be the best ride in the world. Gearing will help, but remember Nissans get expensive fast when it comes to the rear axle.

i run 4.90's in my pathfinder with 35's, and like bill said, i run about 4000 RPM at at 55 MPH up i-70, and it will hold that speed just fine. yeah it's slow and loud, but like bill also said, it's a 4500lb brick. i can 85 on the flats, never tried to go faster.
