Sounds like a stupid question, but is the transmission in gear? No use spinning the shaft if it's in neutral.

As far as lining them up, I use this trick (although I'm usually under a lift with a tranny jack, air tools and tons of light).

Put your head under the bell housing area (not joking) and eyeball the gap all around the bell housing to engine block. Then, using the dowels as guide, make sure it's lined up height-wise. With the transmission in gear, and the t-case in 4HI, I can spin the front output shaft of the t-case to get the input shaft of the tranny to spin. Usually falls into place at that point.

I'm working on Saturday, and putting together a race car on Sunday. Wish I could help out!

ok well jamie gave me a hand today. i think we got it closer than what it was when we started. call me a dumb ass but i had gotten a line that was supposed to be on the passenger side between the tranny and the engine so the bell housing would not slide any further closer to the engine. then we found a bolt in the bell housing (i had used some to hold the plates on and together and i guess i forgot one) so i cused my self out a few times and we moved on. we got to the point where it slid in a little further and we could not turn the front drive shaft any more. so i am thinking the splines are lined up and slightly in its just that its a tight fit so it wont with out some help....sooooo.....went to Lowes and bought some longer bolts to crank on and see if i cant pull it in that way. gonna also lower the truck a little (two or three clicks on the stands not 7 or 8). plan is to hit it hard Monday and see what i can do. oh yea gonna empty the tranny fluid out as well.

sorry for messing up that line, but it was hosed anyway. i tend to get pissed at things when they don't do what i want and end up cutting them out. after bending it up though it was done for.
good luck on monday, think about getting another set of jack stands and get the back end up a bit, not having to fight gravity will help.

no worries on the line i talked to the girl who has my 92 and she pulled the line formt hat one so i have an extra. i might get a set of stands too cause them are my dads and i would not mind having my own.

Well, since the line is messed up, there goes the other trick.

When you get the longer bolts in, you could engage the clutch and help to get things lined up a bit better.

I would hesitate to just crank on the longer bolts to suck it up. It should slide in, not be all bound up like that.

Did you use an alignment tool for the clutch? And instead of just letting it hang there while you tightened the pressure plate, did you hold it up a little bit to insure that the disc was centered and not down just a hair? Because if you used a plastic alignment tool, and just let the disc hang from it and tightened it all up like that, then I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that the disc is off center a bit, causing the transmission to bind as it goes it.

If you use the longer bolts to suck the transmission up, then you could mar the hell out of the pilot bushing and possibly damage the clutch disc as well.

what other trick? oh and ben, i had a dream that youy still had those other bolts in there, run your hand around the back and make sure they aren't there still.

it is so close man, it wants to go in but it just won't. we can get it to the point where the spines are engaged enough that you can't turn the front output on the case, so the splines are close it just doesn't want to slide in the rest of the way.

Don't use longer bolts to suck it up, the bellhousing will crack.

I know this sounds counter productive but if it is binding you need to take it apart and find out why.

milehighcowboy

ok so the general saying is to not use longer bolts to suck it up. then what do i do take it all apart and re do everything? i mean that would blow if i have to do that. i mean i did just put the alignment tool in and tighten it up i did not think holding it up was necessary. maybe thats it i really dont want to lower the eintire tranny again. mother lovin A!!!. who wants 100 bucks to get this thing in? this i s pissing me off. if i have to drop it this will be the third time to drop and have to re raise. that aint easy even with the truck pulling it up. seriously who wants some cash or beer?

Is it dry were you're at? I can only work on Ben's T-case in the mornings because they kick me out of the shop at night. So I might be able to come over there and help out. I don't need a $100, just fill up my gas tank and we'll call it good! :D I'll even bring over my alignment tool. It's better than those plastic things and it's made from the input shaft of a transmission. So if it fits in, it's good to go!

think you could come over tomorrow night that is the only night i am not working?

Allen you are the bomb man. thanks soo much for helping me ge that alligned properly. i went back out and started tightening them bolts earlier and have most of em all most done. i am just going to bolt everything on and set it down that way instead of just putting it on the bump stops.

so was it an alignment issue with the clutch? or the trans itself?

Allen Cox
04-10-2007, 05:58 AM
The clutch. We took the pressure plate loose and realigned the disc using my alignment tool, which is an old input shaft that I cut down. Once we had that all figured out, then the transmission went right in. I say went right in, but it took some wiggling around and Ben slice his finger up pretty good on the cut up exhaust. He's a trooper!

Should be up and running in no time now.

thanks for the compliment allen :D . there was no way in hell i was gonna quit with it soo close. plus i had you here and i was determined to get it in before you left lol. i dont know if i am going to have it running with the next two weeks though. parents needed some cash and now i am low on money so i may have to wait to be able to buy the fluids. but tomorrow if its not as windy i am going to start torquen downt he bolts and getting everthing put back on. i think though i am going to have to get some new sensors the old ones are pretty beat up. i think the hardest part now is going to be elcetrical. i have no clue what i am doing there either lol. time to get the write ups out and take a look. thanks again guys.
