View Full Version : Creaking Torsion Bars?

My little DD Hardbody has had this annoying squeak/creak in the front suspension since I've had it, pretty much any time the front suspension (either side) moves at all, it makes a lot of really obnoxious squeaking. It does have the bars turned up a bit (PO's doing, I have no idea how much) and it kinda sounds like it's coming from farther back than the a-arms, does this sound right at all or am I just hearing things? It's looking more and more every day like I'm going to be parting out my buggy project and turning this into a light weekend wheeler so I'd like to quiet things down a big so I don't have to hear it on the trail all day.

Most of the time this happens when someone installs aftermarket upper control arms. Are yours?

As Ryan said, I got aftermarket upper control arms and mine squeaked like crazy after my t-bar crank. All it was for me was the bushings though.

The Bushings are known for squeaking late in there life on the front suspension of older Nissans. just buy a bushing kit and take half a day to replace them...usually its the Strut rod Bushing thats fried.

The strut rod can also be damaged from the bushing being bad for YEARS! However, normally that is more of a clunking sound.

This is true, if the Bushing is bad for a long time it may hallow out the strut rod mount and wear down the strut rod its self.

The Strut rod bushing kit should come with a new metal sleeve to replace the worn one. just make sure the wear doesnt dig into the strut rod its self.

I would suggest Black Bushings if available as they have Teflon in them and help prevent squeaking.

This is a pic of the Strut rod mounting hole, it will be warn a bit. As long as its not worn down to where the hole looks like a egg shape you should be ok. If it is worn down that much i heard of people welding washers there to correct the strut rod from sitting in correctly in the hole.

If you do that washer trick.. make sure to weld it on the backside. If welded on the front side it will jack up your alignment.
