So time came to replace the timing belt on Lucy and I am fighting hell getting the cam shafts and crank shaft to correct timing. I followed the directions that came with the new belt and even tried what good ol chilton said and nothing. I am lining the marks up on the pulleys to what is on the truck and getting number 1 to TDC and am having the worst luck. Any ideas guys?

What is going wrong?
Most belts have three lines....just line up the marks on the gears with the lines on the belt and you are good to go.
It should be noted that if you took the cam gears off there is a left and right gear.

No cams got removed. The book and the instructions saybto turn the left cam to get the number 1 cylinder to top dead center, turning the cam is already a p.i.t.a. I just cannot find the correct timing...

Did you line it up on tdc before you took it apart?

No, i removed the old timing belt and in the process of taking off the crankshaft pulley and harmonic balancer things got turned that shouldn't have

I'm going to let Allen or James answer now...it's an interference engine, at this point forcing the cams or crank to turn without removing the rocker arms could be a bad thing.

Both my book and the instructions say to turn the cams and get them to tdc, just not to turn them with the belt removed.

^.....sounds like they did turn with the belt off.
I would pull the valve covers and loosen the rocker arms (while I cussed myself out) not an easy task on an E motor.

Yeah they turn without the belt. Where is tdc for the crankshaft? I have no markings anywhere for it.

The gear has a marking...you have to take off everything but the gear off.
Turning them without the belt on and the timing set correctly could cause the valves to hit the pistons and bend...I would advise against forcing it.

As you are looking at it, the left cam (1st bank) should be at about 10 O'Clock, the right should be at 2. As you are looking at the belt, the NISSAN writing should be up top, and the arrows should be pointing toward you. There are 3 Marks. One is dotted and two are solid (or vice versa?) The two similar ones are NOT for the cams.

I have the timing marks on the truck and can kind of see where it needs to be, the major one is the crank shaft, no markings what so ever. I had the belt on in the right direction...

Once the correct TDC is set (before removing ;) ) you are on the correct mark. The marks ARE there. They are just a PITA to see when the belt is old.

See James I had got them where they needed to be, but when taking the bolt off for the harmonic balancer the crankshaft got spun with out the timing belt on...

Then simply spin it back. I don't remember at this point, but I think that mark should be at about 5 O'clock. So, Put the belt on as I was saying, then slip it on the crank. There IS a dimple on the crank. It is just like the cam. There are also dimples on the timing covers too, so you have 3 marks per cam/crank to work with.
